“He had the opportunity but failed-to-clarify” Brooklyn Nets release statement for suspending ‘UNFIT to be associated’ Kyrie Irving
Kyrie Irving
The Brooklyn Nets issued a statement in which they declared Kyrie Irving to be ineligible to be associated with the team and to receive a minimum 5-game suspension for his tweets about a film that featured explicit antisemitic slurs. Irving’s adamant refusal to apologize at Thursday’s media session also seems to have accelerated this decision.
Last week, Irving used social media to promote the movie “Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America.” Since then, despite numerous opportunities to apologize or fully denounce the film’s content, Irving has resisted doing so. The NBA addressed Kyrie Irving directly for the first time in a statement earlier that day, which was made public. Later, after a training, Kyrie was given the option to apologize during media availability, but he chose to take things a step further which made the Nets condemn him.
After the incident, the Nets management issued a formal statement declaring the player will be suspended for at least five games. The declaration stated: “This was not the first time he had the opportunity – but failed – to clarify… We are of the view that he is currently unfit to be associated with the Brooklyn Nets. We have decided that Kyrie will serve a suspension without pay until he satisfies a series of objective remedial measures that address the harmful impact of his conduct and the suspension period served is no less than five games.”
What is up with Kyrie Irving and his antisemitism promotion?
Kyrie Irving made an attempt to show out his atrocious behavior last Friday by sharing a link to the 2018 documentary “Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America,” which has antisemitic connotations and is based on a book by the same name. The novel and movie have both drawn criticism for their antisemitic themes, and the latter appears to have been controversial. The NBA and Nike, with which Irving has a contract with, had issued statements denouncing antisemitism and hate speech in addition to the press release.
After sharing the movie’s link, Irving and ESPN’s Nick Friedell engaged into a heated exchange during which Irving was questioned the concept of endorsing the film. Irving and the Nets were to donate $500,000 to associations and causes that work to fight discrimination and intolerance in our communities, the team and the Anti-Defamation League said in a joint statement on Wednesday. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and Nets owner Joe Tsai also expressed worry about Irving’s lacking of an apology in their own statements.
Irving and Brooklyn Nets are on the cusp of a complete breakdown
Following a joint statement with Irving, the Nets made their announcement the previous day. Irving acknowledged in his comment that the tweet had an impact on other people, but he did not offer an apology. He could lose even more money than what he’s scheduled to lose because the Brooklyn Nets have suspended him without pay. If the Nets decide to suspend Irving without pay until the end of the season, it is unclear how much he will receive in reimbursement. Also, there are rumors suggesting the team parting ways with the guards for his unnecessary off-court antics.
Also, it’s unclear if Irving’s suspension will be longer than the minimum five games specified in the clause and this would affect the team crucially as they are now 2-6 into the new NBA season. This entire situation could have been avoided with a simple apology, but instead the situation had fallen far more dramatically. It would be interesting to see if NBA Commissioner Adam Silver follows through on his intention to meet with Kyrie Irving after the Nets already announced his suspension.
