Celtics legacy gets asterisk from Gilbert Arenas: “In last 30 years, Boston has been irrelevant!”
Gilbert Arenas doesn’t believe the Boston Celtics can win the title this season.
Gilbert Arenas and the Boston Celtics
Gilbert Arenas is back again with another controversial statement, this time around, it is about a rival team. The former Washington Wizards player took a dig at the Boston Celtics and their former player, Paul Pierce during a recent session on his podcast, Gils Arena Show.
The Boston Celtics last won an NBA title in 2008 during one of the franchise’s golden eras that included: Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. Since then they’ve huffed and puffed and flirted with the title only to fall flat when it mattered the most evidenced by the numerous playoff appearances.
However, the C’s have been the best team in the league this season and this prompted their former All-Star, Pierce to predict that the Celtics were his favorites to win a record 18th NBA championship title. A comment ‘Agent Zero’ wasn’t pleased with as he had very harsh words for the team, saying their 2008 winning team were forgettable, as well as calling the franchise irrelevant.
Arenas said:
I don't even know if anybody's alive to remember when they won championships back in those days. In the last 30 years, Boston has been irrelevant in basketball history. You got one chip in the last 30 years. You walking around like this sh*t is on your chest... nobody remembers you.Gilbert Arenas said
While some may argue that Arenas is being excessively harsh, no one can dispute the fact that the C’s have a toxic relationship with consistency. Taking into account last season’s shocking elimination at the hands of the Miami Heat, one thing is certain, if their star player Jayson Tatum finds a way to stay consistent, maybe championship number 18 might be a reality.
What the Celtics need to do to discredit Gilbert Arenas?
The Boston Celtics already are the best team in the NBA right now. Having conquered the Eastern Conference already and being the first team to clinch a spot in the playoffs, they go in as the bookmakers’ favorite. However, going by previous experience that doesn’t always translate to actually winning the main prize.
To prove their doubters wrong, the C’s have got to solve their Jayson Tatum inconsistency problem because when he is on fire the whole team seems unstoppable, and this is not to discredit the effort of fellow star player, Jaylen Brown. Also, they need to find a way to win in clutch moments as championship-winning teams are characterized by their ability to turn losses into wins.
The Celtics know that they have to work on their past performances in order to shut their critics down. This season their record of 55-14 is the best in the league. However, there’s a lot of work to do for the C’s to surpass the Lakers and get championship number 18.
