LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers fell to the Boston Celtics in the overtime thriller on Tuesday. Charles Barkley slammed the NBA for giving the Lakers too much media attention despite being one of the worst teams in the league. It was their 16th loss of the season as they still remain in the 12th spot in the Western Conference.
In the half-time analysis on NBA on TNT, Ernie Johnson asked Barkley to give his take on the game but Barkley brought up another and perhaps a valid argument in the conversation. Chuck called out the league for forcing media attention, despite knowing they are nowhere near being a good team in the league.
He said, “The Lakers stink….they all forcing us to show all the time like they gonna be good.” Barkley might not be entirely wrong in his opinion as several teams like Memphis Grizzlies, Sacramento Kings, Atlanta Hawks, Indiana Pacers, and others who have a better record than the Lakers, do not get coverage by the media. However, the Lakers are historically one of the top two teams in the league with the Boston Celtics, so the media attention comes with that.

Continuing his rant after the Celtics’ win over the Lakers, Charles said, “It’s a conspiracy… we got all these clowns on television, have to talk about them everyday.” However, as bad as the Lakers’ record shows in the season, they have exponentially improved their record since last month. Had their season not started with 12-2, at this pace they would have been among the playoff teams in the Western Conference.
Disappointed with the league’s approach to covering different teams in the league, Barkley brought forth the fact that a lot of teams like the Washington Wizards which are in the same spot as the Lakers in the Eastern Conference do not get media coverage. “We don’t talk about the Washington Wizards, do we,” Barkley said.
While Barkley might be right in his opinion, the Lakers won their 17th championship only two years before in 2020. Also, despite having a bad season so far, they have arguably the league’s most celebrated superstar in LeBron James, hence the media attention also comes with him.
