“He doesn’t have the mentality” Chris Broussard reveals Russell Westbrook doesn’t have it in him to become a role model in Hollywood
Some Los Angeles Lakers fans are concerned about Russell Westbrook’s connection with his teammates as the NBA regular season approaches, thanks to a recent video. But don’t worry, Patrick Beverley assures us that “everything is OK.” The footage appears to show Westbrook rejecting Beverley’s movements to join a short huddle during the Lakers’ 118-113 preseason defeat to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night. Westbrook fouled Jaden McDaniels, who scored with 10 minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Fans chastised Westbrook on social media for lingering at the free-throw line and missed the Lakers’ defensive huddle. Beverley informed reporters that he had no knowledge of the footage. Instead, he shared amusing stories about their connection. “I’m sitting on the plane, and he’s right next to me,” Beverley explained. “We hit the road and hang out together.” Though Beverley addressed worries about a lingering animosity with Westbrook after being traded to the Lakers last summer, this is more proof that the two had gone past Beverley’s assertions that Westbrook “hurt his career.”
WIll Russell Westbrook and Patrick Beverley be able let go of their beef ?
During the organization’s media day, Beverley stated that Westbrook was his best buddy on the team. We might be reading too much into things, but that didn’t seem to be the case at the time. Otherwise, it was encouraging to see Beverley lead since the Lakers lacked fire and passion for most of last season, and the guard is known for his intensity. But if Westbrook doesn’t heed simple demands like entering the team huddle, this isn’t going to end well.
Chris Broussard of First Things First believes that what transpired was merely a foreshadowing of what is to come: “This is a harbinger of what’s to come. Russell Westbrook is not built to be a role player and that’s what they’re asking him to be. Last night, in 25 minutes, he took three shots. They want Russ to be a role player and I think he’s sincere. “I think he’s gonna try, and I think he’s gonna say the right things but he doesn’t have the mentality, the makeup, or even the skill set. It’s gonna come out in body language, facial expressions, and sighs.”
Following the events of last season, many are eager to see if Russell Westbrook can rebound from his underwhelming campaign. They’re also curious to see if he’ll modify his playstyle to be a team winner, even if it means sacrificing his own stats. Westbrook was a considerably superior player than Beverley at their best. One is a multiple-time All-Star and potential Hall of Famer, while the other is a solid role player. Having said that, the former Los Angeles Clippers guard may be the Lakers’ more valued player right now.
