The question of whether the 38-year-old NBA veteran point guard Chris Paul will secure a spot in the Golden State Warriors‘ starting lineup or come off the bench has been a significant topic of discussion since July. This debate stems from both his extensive career as a starter ever since his NBA debut in 2005 and a light-hearted remark he made when questioned about his role with the team.
When asked about his role, Paul cheekily retorted, “You coaching?” and then added, “I don’t know what the situation is going to be yet. That’ll be for us to figure out once we get going.” CP3’s tone and impish grin suggested a strong belief in his starter status, regardless of the Warriors roster.
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr acknowledges the quandary the Golden State Warriors confronted with the arrival of Paul. CP3 brings leadership and star quality, but he has predominantly been a starting point guard on his previous teams.
“We basically have six starters, the way I look at it. And only five can go each night. So, I haven’t decided yet what we’re gonna do. I’m wanna see in training camp. We’re gonna try different combinations and take a look. Obviously, all six guys are gonna play a lot of minutes for us. If this is gonna work, then everybody has to embrace it regardless of who’s starting and who’s not,” said Kerr.
Steve Kerr’s Endearing Fondness for ‘Old School’ Chris Paul revealed
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr recently lightened the Chris Paul discussion with humor. Kerr praised Paul’s preference for phone calls over texts and highlighted their meaningful summer conversations before anything else.
Kerr shared his admiration for Chris Paul’s penchant for phone calls over text messages, humorously likening him to himself as an “old school.”
Recently, in a press conference, Kerr fielded inquiries about the upcoming Warriors’ season. Given Chris Paul’s status as a marquee acquisition this summer, Kerr was prompted to provide insight into Paul’s integration with the team.
“I really like Chris because he like phone calls and not texts. Chris is old school, he wants to talk and we’ve had 4-5 great conversations this summer.” said Kerr. Additionally, he also shared his admiration for Paul’s competitive spirit, high basketball IQ and experience.
Paul is entering his 19th season in the NBA, having played for a number of teams, including LA Clippers, Houston Rockets, and most recently with the OKC Thunder. Paul’s quest for his first championship taste continues this time with one of the most successful NBA organizations of this era.
