If the Phoenix Suns decide to release Chris Paul this offseason, the Los Angeles Lakers may explore signing him as an unrestricted free agency. The 12-time All-Star point guard, who has a partially guaranteed contract with the Suns, has the best odds (3/1) to be acquired by the Lakers, according to BetOnline.ag via NBACentral.
Sports Illustrated’s Donnie Druin reported in May 2022 that Phoenix might release Paul this summer and “only be on the hook for about half of Paul’s $30.8 million hit.” If the Suns do decide to release Paul, he will be an unrestricted free agent and the Lakers will be able to sign him without having to make any concessions.
Paul was previously acquired by the Lakers from the New Orleans Hornets in December 2011, but the trade was rejected by former commissioner David Stern. CP3 was ultimately traded by the Hornets to the Los Angeles Clippers.
Paul averaged a career-low 13.9 points per game during his somewhat underwhelming season, shooting 44.0% from the field, 37.5% from beyond the arc, and 83.1% from the free throw line. The Lakers might benefit from his leadership and experience as he is still regarded as one of the best NBA players of all time.

Suns Expected to Explore Trade for Chris Paul
Tim MacMahon of ESPN reports that the Phoenix Suns are rumoured to be interested in trading for Chris Paul this offseason. According to insiders, Paul and Deandre Ayton may both be moving on after the Denver Nuggets defeat in the playoffs.
“Paul, 38, who missed the final four games of the series against the Nuggets because of a strained left groin and showed signs of decline throughout the season, is guaranteed a little more than half of his $30.8 million salary for next season,” MacMahon wrote. “The salary would become fully guaranteed on June 28, and the Suns are expected to explore what they might get if they traded Paul before making a decision on his contract.”
Paul and Ayton played major factors in the Suns’ NBA Finals appearance in 2021. Paul’s age and declining performance are issues, though, as his team didn’t make it far in the playoffs this year.
Overall, the NBA offseason looks fascinating since a number of well-known players may be moving about. The future of Chris Paul, the Lakers, and the Suns will have to be seen by fans.
