The Los Angeles Clippers had a bold vision when they landed Kawhi Leonard and Paul George in a blockbuster trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2019. They wanted to create a superteam that could compete with the best in the NBA, especially their crosstown rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers. But that vision never materialized.
Now, the Clippers are facing a dilemma. Leonard and George are both eligible for lucrative extensions this offseason, but they can also opt out of their contracts and become free agents next summer.
According to Marc Stein, the Clippers are gauging George’s trade value ahead of the NBA Draft on Thursday. While it is unclear how serious they are about moving him or what they would want in return, it seems that they are at least open to the idea of breaking up their star duo.
If the Clippers decide to trade George or Leonard, they would likely look for a package that includes young talent, draft picks and salary relief. They also face a looming deadline to lock them up with huge extensions, or risk losing them in free agency next summer. The Clippers have to decide if they want to keep this duo together, or explore other options.
NBA Twitter roasts Clippers over failed superteam with Paul George and Kawhi Leonard
As soon as Stein’s report came out, NBA Twitter was quick to react with jokes and memes about the Clippers’ situation. Many fans mocked them for giving up so much for George and getting so little in return. Others called them the “worst superteam of all time”.
Here are some of the tweets that roasted the Clippers:
The draft is just around the corner and the Clippers have a big decision to make. Do they stick with George and Leonard, who have rarely been healthy and available at the same time in the playoffs?
Or do they trade George, who has been inconsistent and underwhelming in the clutch? It’s hard to know what the Clippers are really thinking, but they have every reason to consider shaking things up.
