“He would only be a rotational player in teams like Warriors and Bucks” Colin Cowherd believes Russell Westbrook has to start looking in that proverbial athlete mirror
Colin Cowherd on Los Angeles Lakers and Russell Westbrook
Los Angeles Lakers are banking on Russell Westbrook to be the star he once was if they are to change their fortune in the upcoming 2022-23 season. His Wizard form took a serious hit and his 2022 season performance was insanely disappointing. As a result of which, many expected the Lakers to seek better alternatives to challenge for the title. Trade with the Brooklyn Nets looked on the cards, but both teams looked firm on their demands for respective stars. A potential trade to the Brooklyn Nets is seemingly done, it appears that Westbrook will remain in LA. Colin Cowherd believes it’s time for Russell Westbrook to look in the mirror, only to improve himself. During an episode of his show, the sports media personality spoke about how he was right about Westbrook.
58-year-old analyst Cowherd is a top star in sports journalism. He has been vocal about his opinions and currently, he is been one of the media personalities feuding with Russell Westbrook over his time at the Lakers.
Cowherd kept on putting his finger on how Westbrook should mold himself according to the situation and franchise. He said, “Listen, I understand it. You gotta have $200 million. You’re a rock star. You’re world famous. It is hard to self-analyze and be self-critical. I do think Russell has to start looking in that proverbial athlete mirror and saying, ‘This is what I am at this current time. I’ve had a great career.'”
Russell Westbrook must accept secondary roles to make more impact as per Colin Cowherd
Former MVP Russell Westbrook has been a star player for his teams in the past. After Kevin Durant and James Harden left Oklahoma City Thunders, Russ had carried the team on his back. But after failing to make any progress in the playoffs, he joined hands with old Pal James Harden at the Rockets, and then with Bradley Beal at the Washington Wizards.
But he couldn’t deliver any title in either of the franchise, though he performed exceedingly well for all the teams he played in. He won Scoring titles, and assists titles, and maintained his triple-double standards in all those teams. And when he formed a trio with the 2020 NBA champions LA Lakers, it was a near-certain championship ring for him. But he continued playing as he did in the past, and couldn’t form the required chemistry within the franchise.
To Cowherd’s point, Westbrook is where he is today because of his style of play. Unfortunately, he has not been able to adapt to his new team. The nine-time All-Star is one of the best hustle players ever, but that style of play does not fit with every group. Still, the show host believes there is a place for a player like Westbrook in the NBA.
Explaining his views, Cowherd said, “I think, at this point, Westbrook is a rotational player on a good team. He may be a starter on a bad team, but on a very good team, a Warriors, a Milwaukee, he feels like a rotational player to me.”
Cowherd might have a very valid point using Westbrook in a better way. While LA New head coach looks excited to have Russ on the team, he might also need to look into a potential change of role for him. Transitioning to a rotational role would allow Westbrook to keep his current playing style while still playing on a contender.
While there are lots of rumors around Westbrook, making different kinds of claims related to his future, Russ has to analyze the situation and make the best possible decision for himself.
