“This can make the Lakers fit right back in championship contention” Colin Cowherd makes honest assessment on Russell Westbrook trade to Jazz

The Los Angeles Lakers haven’t been that active in the off-season and have yet to make a move for the roster trade this year. They have made an extension with LeBron by signing him with a hefty amount but need to provide him with good team support to pocket another title. Sports analyst Colin Cowherd feels that the Lakers should trade Russell Westbrook to Utah Jazz. Also, he thinks that this trade will be beneficial to both sides.
‘The Herd’ host Colin Cowherd mentioned that Russell no longer fits in the Lakers squad, so they should trade him to Utah Jazz. He suggests that the Lakers go after Utah Jazz star guard Donovan Mitchell. Including Mitchell will boost the rooster of the LA Lakers and will put them back as strong contenders for the title. On the other hand, Russell Westbrook will come as a handy player for the Jazz and fits well in their rooster. This trade can be a win-win situation for both teams. Talking about the trade idea, Colin Cowherd quoted: “Danny Ainge is a draft-pick guy. Would he eat Westbrook for those two draft picks?…Lakers get Donovan Mitchell, who I like. You get two draft picks and the Westbrook contract, which you can just write it off and let him go.”
Russell Westbrook only averaged 18.5 pts per game last season. Yet he is the second highest-paid player in the NBA, right behind Golden State Warriors Stephen Curry. The Lakers would have to include first-round picks if they have to trade Russell Westbrook, but they don’t have many left as they used most of them to acquire Anthony Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans in 2019. They still have the option of trading their 2027 and 2029 first-round picks with Westbrook, but the Lakers front office did not like this idea.
Adding Donovan Mitchell boosts the Lakers squad
Donovan Mitchell averaged 25.9 pts per game last season while playing for the Utah Jazz. Known as one of the deadliest scorers, he is a complete player who can be a perfect match to the Lakers setup and boost their chances as title contenders. He can provide the necessary support to LeBron James and Anthony Davis, and can step up to the team responsibilities if there’s an injury scare to Davis. With the season just round the corner, it will be interesting to see how this trade shapes up.
