“What every basketball coach at every level is looking for” Colin Cowherd believes a player like Stephen Curry is every coach’s desire
Colin Cowherd talks about Stephen Curry
Sports TV Personality Colin Cowherd lauds Stephen Curry and his performances in the 2022 NBA playoffs. But going beyond, the former looked upon on the Warriors’ main man as a player every coach would desire to have on his team.
Golden State Warriors exerted their dominance in NBA Finals, especially in the last 3 games, where they gave very little chance to Eastern Conference Champions Boston Celtics. Every member on the court for Golden State Warriors contributed well to the team, but it was Stephen Curry who shone the brightest and won his 1st Finals MVP Award in the process too. Even though Curry was very consistent in his performances over the years, it was an incremental graph for him and his 2022 playoff run was well above any of his previous seasons. Coach Kerr happy with his marquee player expressed satisfaction over the team’s performance and heaps of praises for the sharp-shooter.
For sports analyst Colin Cowherd though the FMVP and Kerr’s appreciation do not validate his standing as one of the all-time greats to “smart sports fans”. He puts Steph amongst the best of the stars, if not at the pinnacle of NBA History. But added that Steph is one player every coach would love to have on a team.
Multi-talented and Lethal Stephen Curry would always be a good fit for any coach’s plans
Warriors’ final game of the 2022 season ended with a 103-90 victory over the Boston Celtic, bagging the 4th NBA Title in the last 8 seasons. The team was the most consistent performer since 2015, making 6 finals. Team leader Stephen Curry led from the front on the offensive end primarily and also defensively whenever needed.
Many people in the NBA community had been talking about Steph’s Finals MVP award, as it was missing from his illustrious career and even though he won 3 titles before, never was “MVP” caliber. However, Cowherd thinks that it is wrong to assume that’s the stamp of approval the All-Star guard needs.
On his show, “The Herd with Colin Cowherd” the sports commentator explained, “Steph Curry’s MVP doesn’t validate anything to smart sports fans. Here’s my validation. In the history of professional basketball in America, the Mt. Rushmore to me is indisputable. It’s Michael (Jordan), Magic (Johnson), LeBron (James), and the greatest center of all time, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.”
Setting the bar so high, Colin added that there could be 2nd fiddle of the best players in the league, who are close enough to the above-mentioned mega stars. He said, “But just down the road, maybe five-six miles, there’s the Mt, Rush-A-Little-Less. It’s that second mountain range, and it’s (Bill) Russell, (Larry) Bird, Kobe (Bryant), and Steph, and I don’t think it’s even remotely arguable. Steph Curry is what every basketball coach at every level is looking for.”
In the 2022 NBA finals, Steph had shown versatility in his performances. 34-years old star played well on both ends of the floor, though his offense completely overshadowed his defensive game. He averaged 31.2 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 2.0 steals in the series. He shot 43.7% from beyond the arc and had an average of 5 three points in-game (that’s 15 points). He did open up the game to new possibilities, ways to approach the game, and of course affecting opponent defenses. After a magnificent performance on the biggest stage, Steph was awarded the Bill Russell NBA Finals MVP Award through a unanimous vote.
His court vision, off-ball movement, ball-handling abilities, and shooting make him a dangerous offensive weapon on the court, while his knowledge of the game, reading opponent’s tactics, and defensive ability sets him aside as a defender – though he is just 6’2” on the floor. He is a very good if not the best perimeter defender and has shown good reflexes stealing the ball.
His versatility makes him an ideal player for any team of any era as per 54-years old analyst Cowherd. In the post-game interview, Coach Kerr also mentioned that he has Steph to thank for the 4 rings he won as a coach. Kerr also now has a total of 9 rings as a player and coach.
