Damian Lillard was recently invited to a talk show called ‘It Is What It Is.’ He was asked about what his thoughts were on trades and how he felt about winning rings. Speaking on the topic, Lillard brought up NBA superstar Kevin Durant. Lillard said that he would never have done what Durant did in 2016, when he left the Oklahoma City Thunder to join the Golden State Warriors in his quest for a ring.
Lillard was critical in his statements, saying he would never have done what Durant did back in 2016. Some felt this was highly hypocritical of Lillard, considering that he finds himself in a similar position now. Lillard has requested to be traded to the Miami Heat. For context, the Miami Heat reached the NBA finals last year. This means Lillard has been asked to be traded to a team that is already championship-caliber. It is because of this fact that comparisons have been drawn.
On Durant’s move to the Warriors, Lillard said, “I’ve said this plenty of times before. I think KD is obviously one of the greatest players of all time. But if I was in his shoes I wouldn’t have done that, personally.”
The parallels between Lillard’s request to be traded to the Eastern Conference champions, the Heat, right now, and Durant’s signing with the Western Conference Champions, the Warriors, in 2016, are strikingly similar. While one could argue that Durant’s decision was worse, since he signed with the team that beat him, it can also be said that Durant won two rings during his time there, making it worthwhile.
NBA fans displeased with Damian Lillard’s statements
Lillard’s statements about Durant did not sit well with many fans. Quite a few felt that Lillard’s criticism was unrequired and, to an extent, extremely self-righteous.

Fans took to Twitter to vent their frustration with Lillard. They minced no words while expressing their anger. Here are some of their reactions:
As the regular season approaches, Lillard’s future looks even more uncertain. The Portland Trailblazers have not yet found a suitable trade for him, and it appears that, at least for the time being, Lillard is stuck in Portland.
