WATCH: Deandre Ayton and Coach Monty Williams of the Phoenix Suns have a heated exchange during a time-out
Read on to find out why Deandre Ayton and Suns coach Monty Williams had an argument during a game against the Washington Wizards
Deandre Ayton and Monty Williams of the Phoenix Suns
All doesn’t seem to be well in the Phoenix Suns’ camp after a video of center Deandre Ayton and coach Monty Williams having a heated argument went viral. This heated verbal exchange took place during a timeout late in Phoenix’s 113-110 loss on Tuesday night to the Washington Wizards. The fact that Phoenix Suns head coach Monty Williams and center Deandre Ayton don’t always agree is well-known in the NBA.
When the Suns lost to the Dallas Mavericks in Game 7 of the 2017 playoffs, Williams famously benched Ayton, sparking speculation that the top choice in the 2018 NBA Draft might leave the team. But things appear to be going well between the two maybe until last night. Post-game Williams said “It was the whole team in those moments, It wasn’t just Deandre, it was the whole group out there not executing properly. It was a bit of frustration, but that happens. That was not an isolated one-person or one-player thing.”
Later speaking on the same, Ayton said “We weren’t really exchanging words, we’re a family. He knows how to talk to his boys and his boys know how to just communicate. Obviously, the whole world sees it, but it’s really all love and just getting us back to regroup and just take out the confusion.”
Phoenix was on a scoring drought during the 15-0 Washington run that lasted more than four minutes without All-Star Devin Booker. Due to groin pain, Booker missed his second straight game. In addition to Beal’s 27 points, Kyle Kuzma led the Wizards with a game-high 29 points by making 5-of-10 3-point attempts.
Phoenix Suns bought by Billionaire lender Mat Ishbia
After Robert Sarver, the previous owner of the Phoenix Suns was fired for mistreating both players and employees in the NBA, the team has a new owner. The Phoenix Suns and the WNBA’s Mercury will both be controlled by billionaire mortgage banker Mat Ishbia for a record $4 billion.
Ishbia will purchase more than 50% of the teams after paying all of Sarver’s investment and a fraction of that of minority partners. Ishbia, 42, will hold the record for becoming the NBA’s youngest owner once the purchase of the Suns is completed.
