Dennis Rodman
NBA Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman is known to live his life king-size, whether on or off the court. Some of the highlights of his life like the famous Vegas trip of his affair with Madonna, are popularly known and discussed by all. But little does anyone know that Dennis, during his childhood, ran away from his home and vowed never to return.
Dennis’s father was an army officer and one day; he asked his mother to take all his three kids and head to the Philippines. Dennis was in his adolescence. One of his sisters had arranged a successful basketball try-out with Cooke County (Texas) Junior College basketball team when he was just 20. That is where Rodman’s fortune changed. Later, he was sighted by South-eastern Oklahoma State assistant Lon Reisman before he got out of Cooke after only ten games and one semester.
After this sighting, Rodman`s mother, Shirley, forced him to listen to South-eastern’s pitch, whereas Dennis wanted to stay back in his room and ignore it. After too much forcing, Dennis decided to leave his home for the south-eastern state with only a pair of clothes and made a private promise never to come back. From then, Rodman vowed never to look back and continued his journey from a basketball rookie to an NBA Hall of Famer.
Dennis Rodman’s controversial yet successful journey in the NBA
Rodman arrived for his first day of NBA training camp with the Detroit Pistons in 1986. He was the second-round draft pick. In 1988, seven years since his first professional Basketball game, Dennis wasn’t sure how to acquire his new existence in the league. Rodman quoted as per Chicago Tribune, “Used to be I could make a $10 bill last three days. When I got here, that whole first year, I just kept saying, `God, I`m in the NBA! I can`t believe it!` Even now, at the games, it feels like my body is there on the court but my mind is in the stands or something, and somebody else is controlling my body with joysticks or something.
Dennis added, “It`s like I`m somebody else out there, and something is controlling every move, every thought, every action I take. I can`t describe it better than that. But it`s strange.” The Pistons’ Adrian Dantley termed Rodman as the best athlete and best defender he has been around. Even Boston`s Larry Bird claimed Rodman to be the best offensive rebounder of the NBA league.
