DeShawn Stevenson, the unsung hero of the 2011 Dallas Mavericks‘ championship run, was detained for public intoxication in Texas two nights after the team won the NBA title. At the time, according to the police, Stevenson had failed a series of field sobriety tests and was unaware of his whereabouts when he was arrested partying at a friend’s home.

Even after Stevenson retired, his headlines kept coming back; the most recent one to resurface was about his arrest following the 2011 title run.

Two nights after the Dallas Mavericks won the 2011 NBA Championship, Stevenson was taken into custody. According to Fox News, Stevenson was found intoxicated and wandering around an apartment building’s surroundings during the duration of the night and they were forced to take him to arrest because the crime was allegedly excessive alcoholism. After paying a nominal fine, he was freed a short while later.

After obtaining bail, he was let out of jail the following morning. His team initially denied knowledge of the incident and opted not to comment at the time. As the Mavericks defeated the Miami Heat to win their first NBA championship, Stevenson was crucial to their success. He contributed tenacious defense and outside scoring for Dallas as a backup.

One of the more intriguing NBA players in recent years was DeShawn Stevenson. He received some comparisons to Michael Jordan when he entered the NBA straight out of high school. After completing high school, he was chosen by the Utah Jazz as the 23rd overall pick in the 2000 NBA Draft. In the remaining 13 NBA seasons, he was a substantial part of the Jazz, Orlando Magic, Washington Wizards, Dallas Mavericks, New Jersey Nets, and Atlanta Hawks.

He became well-known for his aggressiveness and tenacious defense. He earned nearly $27 million during his time in the NBA, won a championship with the Dallas Mavericks in 2011, and made national headlines for his altercation with LeBron James during the finals. Stevenson left a lasting impression in the 2011 Finals by shooting an incredible 57 percent from outside the arc, including two pivotal games in the series.

Stevenson achieved success in the BIG3 league after leaving the NBA, and the Power selected him with the 11th overall pick in their 2017 draft. Then, he developed into one of the league’s most lethal sharpshooters.

With 32 three-pointers, Stevenson led and set a record in the BIG3 and had nearly double the amount of the next-best team in a single season. He made three game-winning baskets and scored 15.9 points per game on average during his time there. 

DeShawn Stevenson is leading a lot more responsible life these days as his wife, and their children enjoy a happy life in Orlando. He currently lives more comfortably there and has launched Playoffs, a barbershop with a basketball theme.
