“I already have a gold medal…” Devin Booker gets honest on picking between NBA Championship and gold medal for Team USA

Team USA basketball recently announced a 41-man pool for the upcoming Paris Olympics. The Phoenix Suns superstar Devin Booker is on the list. It is the second time he received called up to the national squad. As much as he wants to win another gold for his country, he prefers another piece of gold that eludes him.

After yesterday’s game against the Miami Heat, Booker talked to reporters in the Suns locker room. When asked what his preference would be heading into the summer, this is what Booker replied:

I'm taking that ring. I already have a gold medal.

Booker said this when the reporter asked what he preferred to have come summertime. The NBA Finals end before the summer begins, and the Olympics happen shortly after. Booker mentioned that since he has already won the gold medal at the last Olympics, he would much rather prefer the NBA Championship ring this summer.

Devin Booker and Team USA were victorious during the Toyo Olympics held in 2021. Booker mentioned that it gave a sense of pride to have USA written on your chest and vying for the top honors. This year, the game will not be easy as many other nations have upped their game. Gone are the days when the team from the United States would beat other nations by 30-40 points. LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, and other star players remain intent on competing in the Olympics. Hence, some players might make the final cut. Booker has a good chance, as he is among the best guards in the league.

But since he has already won it, Booker will not mind if he exhausts himself from winning the NBA Championship. Even if it costs him a spot on the Olympics roster, the NBA Championship ring will be the best way to end the season.

Devin Booker and the Suns’ quest to win their first championship

Devin Booker and the Phoenix Suns had a fantastic run in the playoffs the past three seasons. They made the conference semi-finals twice and a finals appearance. The goal of an NBA Championship was within striking distance, but they could never finish it. That is when they brought in Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal. With these two megastars in the building, the only way forward for the Suns is to win that ring.

Under new owner Mat Ishbia, the Phoenix Suns strongly desire to end the wait. It led to the firing of Monty Williams, as Ishbia did not consider him good enough to lead the team. Head coach Frank Vogel has already won a championship. So, to bring together these superstars, formulating a decent bench and bringing in a championship-winning coach is the correct formula.

Winning is the only goal for Booker. If he wins the ring and has something left in his tank, he will gladly wear the stars and stripes for another gold medal quest.
