Joel Embiid, James Harden, and the Philadelphia 76ers will take on Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Semifinals to decide who gets a chance to get home-court advantage in the Conference Finals.

The Philadelphia 76ers advanced to the semis after an easy 4-0 series win over the young Brooklyn Nets in the first round of the playoffs. The Boston Celtics were expected to embark on a similar path but were made to fight hard for their place by Trae Young and Atlanta Hawks. The Celtics won the series 4-2 after a closely contested Game 6.

Many around would agree with the semifinal series between the Joel Embiid and James Harden-led Philadelphia 76ers and Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown-led Boston Celtics to be unpredictable. After all, it’s the second seed in the East battling against the third for a place in the Conference finals. The debate about which has the edge heading into the series has already begun online. However, many on social media are siding with the Celtics for one reason: 76ers head coach Doc Rivers.

Most fans have picked Celtics to beat the 76ers. And, the reason is Doc Rivers’ track record in the playoffs as coach of the Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia Eagles and, ironically, the Celtics. The veteran coach has failed to lead many superstar-studded teams to the championship in the past decade. Fans believe the age-old story of Rivers failing in the playoffs with a talented roster will continue. Under his coaching, championship-bound teams and teams who were heavy favorites in a series have disappeared on numerous occasions.

NBA fans on social media are convinced that the Philadelphia 76ers will meet the same fate as many of Rivers’ past teams have in the playoffs. Despite the presence of superstar duo Joel Embiid and James Harden, fans don’t seem to believe that the 76ers can beat the Celtics. Here are some of the best reactions from fans on social media:

The fans’ predictions are based on Rivers’ track record as a head coach and the recent history between the Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers. During the regular season, the Celtics won the season series 3-1 76ers and dominated them in each win. The trio of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Marcus Smart won’t hold back an inch going against the trio of Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, and James Harden. Embiid’s health is also a concern for the 76ers. It’s still unclear whether the MVP favorite will be available for Game 1 against the Celtics.

The series is going to be very competitive and the 76ers, including Rivers, would be eager to prove critics wrong and take down the reigning Eastern Conference champions. Embiid and Harden’s form will be critical to Philadelphia’s success. If the duo finds its groove, the Celtics may have a tougher task on hand than they did against the Atlanta Hawks in the first round.

Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals between the Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics is scheduled to be played at TD Garden on Monday, May 1 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
