“Drake will sit in on this interview” – Raptors’ interest in Becky Hammon for head coach position has NBA Twitter EXCITED

The Toronto Raptors’ 2022-23 season ended in disappointment, as the team missed the playoffs following their 109-105 loss to the Chicago Bulls in the Play-in tournament. The team has been in a steady decline since the departure of Kawhi Leonard in the summer of 2019 and has now missed the playoffs twice in three years after a run of seven straight seasons of reaching the postseason.

In the wake of the brutal end to their campaign, the Raptors fired head coach Nick Nurse. He spent five seasons with the team as their assistant coach and was promoted to head coach in 2018 after the team made a surprise move to fire head coach Dwane Casey. The move paid dividends as Nurse led the franchise to their first-ever NBA title in his rookie year and won the Coach of the Year award the following season. However, three years of minimal progress has prompted the Raptors to head in another direction.

The Raptors have been linked to a slew of coaches, but one name stands tall among the rest. The latest suggests that the franchise will interview former San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Becky Hammon for their vacant head coach job. Becky had played in the WNBA for 15 years. She began her career with the New York Liberty in 1999 before joining the San Antonio Silver Stars in 2007. Becky retired in 2014 and soon after became the assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs.

Recently, Becky led the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces to a championship and became the first rookie head coach to win a title. Following a successful season and a stellar resume coaching various teams, there’s a good chance to see Becky on the sidelines, coaching the Raptors. However, fans on Twitter had mixed reactions. Some of the Raptors’ supporters believe this may not be the best move for the franchise.

The recent report of Becky Hammon being interviewed by the Raptors led to a frenzy on Twitter. She made history when she took over as the Spurs’ acting head coach after Gregg Popovich was ejected from the game, becoming the first woman to lead an NBA team. With how things are looking, she might as well become the first female head coach of the league. Twitteratis had all sorts of reactions to this possibility:

As of now, it is unknown whether Becky will land as Raptors’ head coach, though her chances seem pretty strong. Having been under Popovich’s wing, Hammon is an experienced coach and can be a good fit for the young Raptors team. The interview dates haven’t been made public, though she will try out for this position soon. The Raptors have made radical coaching decisions in the past. However, this would take the cake if they head in this direction.
