“It’s high time for powers to bring her home” Doug Bruno calls out government officials whilst making Brittney Griner plea
Brittney Griner
During their induction speeches from the Tennessee Theatre in Knoxville on Saturday night, inductees to the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame urged President Biden and the US government to securely bring Brittney Griner home from Russia. The two-time Olympic gold medalist has been detained since Feb. 17, after vape cartridges containing oil derived from cannabis were allegedly found in her luggage at an airport near Moscow.
Two other inductees at the Tennessee Theatre, three-time WNBA champion Penny Taylor and DePaul coach Doug Bruno, took time in their speeches to demand Griner’s safe return. Bruno worked with Griner several times as an assistant coach for Team USA. On May 3, the US government declared her to have been illegally detained, allowing her friends and family to speak openly about her case and draw attention to it.
Brittney Griner’s detainment in Russia
Brittney Griner, a two-time Olympic gold medalist who currently plays for the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA and in the off-season for Russia’s UMMC Ekaterinburg, was reportedly detained in February on drug charges after Customs detected vape cartridges in her luggage at the airport. Griner was visited by US officials last month, and while a spokesperson from the US Embassy in Moscow said she was in “excellent condition,” it is unclear when she will be released.
The US administration, on the other side, believes that Griner was arrested unlawfully, and there appears to be no clear path to her release and return to the US. The WNBA has been supportive of Brittney Griner’s detention for almost three months as she received hundreds of emails and messages from players throughout the league but it was reported that the Russian officials check Griner’s emails and letters before she reads them, and she must react either in writing or by dictation.

Coach Doug Bruno and former WNBA star Penny Taylor state their concern in the HOF speech
Penny Taylor used her Saturday induction into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame to demand the release of her former Phoenix Mercury colleague Brittney Griner, noting that the seven-time WNBA All-Star has been held in Russia for 114 days. “BG is our family, She’s yours, too The entire global sport community needs to come together to insist that she be a priority” Taylor said on her HOF speech. DePaul head coach Doug Bruno also mentioned the star: “Brittney is a great human being, and no one deserves what she is going through,” said Bruno, who has coached Griner as an assistant with Team USA. “Enough is absolutely enough, It is time for the powers that be to bring Brittney Griner home.”
