At the World Athletics Championship that recently took place in Budapest, US track and field star Noah Lyles won three gold medals in 100m, 200m and 4x100m races and made his country proud. Lyles, who is considered to be the successor of Usain Bolt, was not in the headlines for his historic achievements but for his comments about the NBA, which brought criticism from both players and fans.
Lyles recently commented on how the NBA labels their champions as “World Champions” during an interview. He stated that it really confuses him why the NBA labels them as such, as they don’t represent their countries. Meanwhile, he and other athletes at the World Championship in Budapest carry their flags with pride. He also questioned the legitimacy of the title, as the NBA plays in a national league, prompting him to ask what world they were champions of.
Lyles’ comments about the NBA Champions being named “World Champions” seem to have triggered not only fans and NBA players, but also Canadian Hip-Hop star Drake. Drake, a continuous presence at NBA games where he supports his home team, the Toronto Raptors, didn’t seem to like Lyles’ comments at all. He said, “He thought this speech was gonna be so hard in the mirror the night before… now the whole league doesn’t rate you.”

Kevin Durant, Damian Lillard, and other players criticize Noah Lyles for his comments against the NBA
It wasn’t just ChampagnePapi who was upset with Noah Lyles’ comments about the “World Champion” title given to NBA Champions. Many fans and players, especially Kevin Durant and Damian Lillard, also had things to say in reply to his comments. They were not happy with the track and field star discrediting the league which they dedicated their lives to.
KD and Dame were among many players who commented on an Instagram post related to the topic. KD commented, “Somebody help this brother,” while Dame commented, “Tf??.” They weren’t the only ones upset by Lyles’ comments; players like Bam Adebayo and Draymond Green also commented on the situation.
Bam Adebayo commented, “Lol, is someone going to tell him,” while Green commented, “When being smart goes wrong.” Lyles has made his country proud, but his comments have angered many of his fellow countrymen.
