Although it’s commonly accepted that Stephen Curry is the driving force behind the Golden State Warriors’ Dynasty era, Draymond Green recently shared an alternative viewpoint. Currently having one of his lowest-producing seasons to date, the soon-to-be 35-year-old Klay Thompson is coping with the decline of his NBA greatness. Meanwhile, Green claims that even though Thompson is the club’s second-best player, he has had a greater impact on the culture of the team than Steph.

In the most recent episode of his podcast, Draymond Green and Shane Battier discussed the value of cooperation when two players with equal skill levels play together. At the same time, talking about how crucial it is for one player to freely step aside to improve their performance and fill the hole left by the other. Green, who has a great deal of admiration for Klay Thompson, used the comparison between a “pretty girl” and an “ugly girl” to highlight Thompson’s sacrifices for Stephen Curry and the Warriors.

Draymond Green, while sharing his thoughts, said,

The reason why I have a ton of respect for Klay is because two guys walk into a bar - Steph and Klay. And every night Steph says, Alright you see those two girls, I'm taking the pretty one and you gotta take the ugly girl. And Klay says, Alight I'm gonna take the ugly one.

Put more simply, Green wanted to highlight how Thompson generously assumed different responsibilities on the court to free Curry up to concentrate only on his scoring prowess—whether that meant completing other duties or covering the hardest opponents on the wings.

Stephen Curry said,

No matter if it's a starting bench role, whatever it is. He is still Klay Thompson and he can come in and do exactly what he did tonight. Don't let the narratives kind of consume him, that's when he's at his best.

It has been a difficult season for Thompson as he has struggled from the start. Due to his upcoming free agency, he has been the subject of numerous rumors regarding his future with the organization, and the squad’s general troubles have made such rumors worse. However, despite his woes, he could have a successful season finale if he can start to settle into his new role coming off the bench.
