Draymond Green has always been known for his outspoken nature and his willingness to engage in controversies. One notable controversy involves Andrew Nicholson, who was drafted 19th overall in the 2012 NBA Draft, while Draymond was drafted 35th overall. The comparison between their draft positions seemed to be a sensitive point for Draymond, and he didn’t hold back in expressing his views.
Earlier, Draymond had called Andrew a weird-shaped player and said that he never had the body of a basketball player. “Andrew Nicholson was drafted over me at like 19. … At the time y’all are comparing us as big men who can play back to the basket, but I’m looking at this dude … he doesn’t even look like a basketball player,” said Green.
Indeed, Andrew Nicholson wasted no time in firing back at Draymond Green’s remarks. During an appearance on the Tidal League, Nicholson openly addressed the controversy, asserting that Draymond’s comments were fueled by insecurity. He confidently stated that he has never doubted his own capabilities, standing firm in his belief in himself as a basketball player. “I see it as an insecurity… I didn’t know he was thinking about me for the last 11 years. I wasn’t thinking about y’all, I’m going to be honest with you.”
Nicholson’s passive-aggressive attack did not end there. He went ahead and said that he is happy seeing his draft peers doing well, while subtly drawing attention to a perceived contrast with Draymond Green’s behavior.
“The most unfortunate part about it is that for me as an individual and as a person … Maybe it’s just the way I was raised, but I like seeing guys do well,” Nicholson said. “Even if they are drafted above me or they’re drafted below me, that’s just my personality. … When someone has kind of that insecurity and doesn’t want to see someone else do well or is questioning 11 years later why this guy was [drafted] before me, it’s kind of disappointing.”

While Draymond Green carved himself an impressive career, what happened to Andrew Nicholson after 2012?
From the 2012 NBA Draft class, while players like Draymond Green, Damian Lillard, and Anthony Davis have achieved significant success, Andrew Nicholson’s professional journey took a different turn. Drafted 16 spots ahead of Draymond by the Orlando Magic, Nicholson’s NBA career didn’t pan out as expected. During his four years with the Magic, he struggled to make a significant impact, averaging modest numbers of 6.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 0.4 blocks per game, falling below NBA standards.
After a brief stint with the Washington Wizards, where he was traded to the Brooklyn Nets, Nicholson’s NBA career faced further setbacks. Following just ten games with the Portland Trail Blazers, he was waived by the team. This led to him exploring opportunities in the Chinese league, where he has been playing since then.
Despite the challenges and disappointments in his NBA journey, Nicholson seems to harbor no ill will towards his more successful draft peers. He has shown support and happiness for their achievements, even as his own career took a different path.
