Kevin Durant recently claimed that he should be in the discussion of the Greatest Of All Time players. Draymond Green, Durant’s ex-teammate had a unique take on this claim. Green has obviously seen both Durant and current teammate Stephen Curry do great things on the basketball court, firsthand.
Draymond was speaking on his podcast The Draymond Green Show hosted by Volume Sports. On the topic of the GOAT conversation involving Durant, Green had this to say;
I think K.D. is one of the greatest scorers we've ever seen. His championships are real. (But), You got to do what Steph did to get into that conversation.
Draymond alluded that one cannot deny Durant’s championship wins while with the Warriors are legit. As per him, a championship win is as real as it can get. After all, Durant won the Finals MVP both times.
What Draymond suggested was that Curry also got himself into the GOAT conversations after leading the Warriors to their fourth championship in 2022. At that time, there was no all-out scoring champion like Durant to help them. They had to rely on Curry to lead the offense and the team.
Stephen Curry led a team with aging superstars and a lot of new faces who were still trying to make a mark in the league. Curry also did not have Klay Thompson until January. Even after Thompson returned, the Golden State Warriors went through a bad patch of results. Injuries, Thompson’s rustiness from not playing for one and a half seasons, etc. led to the spell.
But starting from the last 5 regular season games, Draymond mentions that it was Curry who rallied the troops. They went on to beat the best of the West en route to their 6th NBA Finals appearance in 8 seasons. Draymond considers that push for the championship is what defines Curry’s status as one of the best.
What else Durant needs to do to be considered in the GOAT conversation?
Kevin Durant is currently 10th in the all-time scoring leaders list. The argument against him in the GOAT debate is that his two championships came with superstars Curry, Thompson, and Green in the lineup. Since leaving the Warriors, Durant has not been in contention for the NBA Championship despite leading multiple talented teams. That is the single most problematic issue with Durant’s legacy.
Durant could not win a championship with the other teams he has played for. This is despite having all-star players at the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Brooklyn Nets, and now the Phoenix Suns. That weighs heavily against Kevin Durant.
