Draymond Green is facing a big choice this summer. The four-time NBA champion and three-time All-Star has opted out of his $27.5 million player option for the 2023-24 season, making him an unrestricted free agent. The 33-year-old forward has been with the Golden State Warriors for his entire 11-year career, forming a legendary trio with Steph Curry and Klay Thompson.

But according to league sources, Green and the Warriors are confident that they will reach a multi-year deal to keep him in the Bay Area. (NBA insider Marc Stein first reported this in his Substack newsletter.)

I continue to hear nothing but strong confidence emanating from the Bay Area that an agreement on a multi-year for Green to stay right where he’s always been is forthcoming. (A three-year deal, league sources say, is a popular current projection for the 33-year-old.),wrote Marc Stein.

Green may not be a prolific scorer, but he is one of the most versatile and impactful players in the league. Green averaged 8.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, 6.8 assists, 1.6 steals, and 0.9 blocks per game in the 2022-23 season while shooting 52.7 percent from the field and 30.5 percent from three-point range.

Draymond Green may not get as much money as Curry, but he could still command a hefty salary in his next deal. Stephen A. Smith said that he believes Green is worth $100 million to $120 million in today’s NBA economy, citing his impact on both ends of the floor and his championship pedigree. One of the possible destinations that has been rumored for Green is the Los Angeles Lakers, where he could join forces with his longtime friend and foe LeBron James.

Green and James have faced each other in four NBA Finals, with Green winning three and James one. They have also developed a mutual respect and admiration over the years and were recently seen hanging out in France.

However, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the chances of Green leaving the Warriors for the Lakers are slim. Wojnarowski reported on June 20 that Green and the Warriors are “destined to reunite” and that both parties are confident of reaching a multi-year deal. Wojnarowski also said that Green is not really posturing or threatening to go somewhere else and that he wants to end his career with Curry at Golden State.

These are two sides who very much want to get a deal done,” Wojnarowski said. “Draymond and [Klutch Sports agent] Rich Paul, they’re not really posturing here, threatening that they’re going to go somewhere else.
