“GoBust there was no need for that”- Fans react as Malik Beasley wanted a piece of Rudy Gobert as he uncharacteristically adds salt to Timberwolves’ burns

Rudy Gobert and Malik Beasley

After Friday night’s Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Utah Jazz game, Malik Beasley approached Rudy Gobert about his former teammate’s antics. In his return to Utah, Gobert was honored with a standing ovation, but the Jazz and their supporters weren’t happy with his final bucket. The three-time Defensive Player of the Year drew some tough words from Beasley following the antics he displayed toward the end of the game.

The Minnesota Timberwolves player Rudy Gobert’s emotional homecoming to Utah was inevitable, and it was, even though not altogether in a positive way. Five months after the blockbuster trade that brought him to Minnesota and appeared to kick-start the Jazz’s full-scale rebuilding, the former Utah Jazz center played his first game against an opponent at the Vivint Arena on Friday.

From the tribute video to the speeches on a nine-season spell in Salt Lake City, the evening was set for the veteran player’s return. Gobert slammed the ball to start the game, but it was his dunk to end it that sparked the uproar.

With less than 10 seconds remaining, the Jazz led the game 116-108 at that point. Utah’s defensive style ultimately left Gobert with the ball under the bucket defenseless. Gobert decided to make a straightforward layup rather than let Minnesota’s excellent victory expire as time ran down.

Both Malik Beasley and Jazz fans found the play to be disrespectful. Once the game ended, Beasley was spotted exchanging words with Gobert until they were split apart. According to Andy Larsen, Beasley said: “Just disrespectful. It’s one of the unwritten rules of basketball. I told him that.”

Given that there were only 2 seconds remaining and the Jazz had already yielded, Rudy Gobert had no justification for acting as he did. Beasley had a good reason to think Gobert was acting disrespectfully. Because the activities were directed specifically toward his previous team, they were much more disrespectful.
