Dejounte Murray has proven thus far that the Atlanta Hawks were smart to trade several draft assets to the San Antonio Spurs for him. The 2022 All-Star guard and his All-Star teammate Trae Young have experienced success together on the court so far this season.

Thirteen games into the season, Murray has already proven his importance which culminated in his standout performances in contests where the Hawks needed him. Today against the 76ers, Murray’s prowess was on full display as he was seen harassing Joel Embiid.

The 76ers held a sizable lead at the halfway point of the second quarter and the score was in their favor. In a specific possession, Dejounte Murray took advantage of the screen on a pick-and-roll play where Tyrese Maxey was defending him and drove directly toward Joel Embiid. The 76ers big man was forced to drop to the floor as a result of Murray’s sudden turnaround and superb footwork following a ball fake. He then hit an open layup as a result of the move which fans thought was a crazy play.

Joel Embiid dominant in the 76ers’ victory over the Hawks

In his 28th game in which he had 40 points, Joel Embiid scored a season-high 42 points, 10 rebounds and six assists as the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Atlanta Hawks 121-109 on Saturday night. Philadelphia’s first 10 points came from Embiid, who also started the game as a provider as the Sixers jumped out to a large lead in the first half by shooting 58.1% from the field. The Sixers were also led by Tyrese Maxey’s 26 points and Tobias Harris’ 21 points.

Fans react to Dejounte Murray snatching Joel Embiid’s soul

The Dejounte Murray deal was seen favorably by many NBA observers but it wouldn’t have much of an impact on the Hawks in the loaded Eastern Conference, aside from perhaps keeping them out of the play-in round. It was unclear how much Murray would improve an NBA defense that finished the previous season as the league’s fifth-worst unit and how well the team would adjust to having yet another ball-dominant player in the backcourt. But he has finally stepped up and performed flawlessly, as was expected of him.

Following are a number of reactions from NBA fans on Twitter:

The Hawks now have another ball-handler and shot-maker to keep the offense moving thanks to Murray, who has had a solid start thus far. If he keeps going on this path, Atlanta might be among the better teams in the Eastern Conference by the end of the season. On the other hand, Joel Embiid has been putting on standout performances throughout the season and is getting used to playing in games without his superstar teammate James Harden.
