The statements made by ESPN’s Brian Windhorst regarding the Golden State Warriors’ choice to play JaMychal Green over Kevon Looney in Game 2 against the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday have generated a lot of controversy. Although Looney’s illness was listed as the official reason for his absence from the starting lineup, Windhorst expressed doubt on his Friday morning appearances at ESPN.
Windhorst questioned the validity of Looney’s illness and implied that the Warriors may have used it as a tactic to throw off the Lakers. “They went smaller, Steve Kerr putting JaMychal Green in the starting lineup coming up with an explanation to try to throw everybody off that Kevon Looney wasn’t playing, wasn’t feeling well, which I find dubious, but maybe it’s true,” Windhorst said on “First Take.”
Windhorst’s history of criticism towards Steph Curry and the Warriors has led many Golden State fans to view his comments as biased and cynical. However, there has been no evidence to suggest that the Warriors intentionally misled anyone about Looney’s illness.
Looney had “come down pretty ill” just hours before the game, according to coach Steve Kerr, who confirmed after the game that Looney was truly sick. The Warriors’ Draymond Green added that he had seen Looney during practice previous to the game and had been shocked by how bad he looked.
Regardless of Windhorst’s doubts, the Warriors’ decision to start Green over Looney proved to be a successful strategy. The Warriors dominated the Lakers in Game 2, winning by a score of 127-100. Green finished with 15 points and two assists in 13 minutes of play, while Looney only played 12 minutes and scored six points.
NBA Twitter Roasts Brian Windhorst
While Windhorst’s comments on the Warriors starting lineup may have been controversial, they also led to some brutal roasts on NBA Twitter. Fans criticized Windhorst for questioning the validity of Looney’s illness and for his history of criticism towards the Warriors.
“Fat man has been in LeBron’s a** for 20 years,” one user tweeted, referencing Windhorst’s close relationship with Lakers star LeBron James. Another user wrote, “What a clown always hating on the Warriors”
While Windhorst’s comments may have been intended to spark discussion and analysis, they ultimately drew backlash and criticism from the NBA community
