Once again, Enes Freedom is in the news for the wrong reasons. The former NBA center previously disclosed a handful of the “hundreds” of death threats he has gotten lately, but this time it appears that he is in serious danger. Freedom received a message from someone claiming to have paid a serial killer to find him. The threats could have something to do with the bounty Turkey has set on his head.
Freedom was born in Switzerland and raised in Turkey, but he became a citizen of the United States in late 2021. Around ten years ago, he began openly criticising Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish president, which caused significant alterations in his life. Due to his political beliefs, his family rejected him and his passport was revoked. The Turkish authorities also issued an arrest warrant for him.
He occasionally chose to stay on American territory while still competing in the NBA out of fear for his safety. The big man did not go to London for a regular season game when he was a member of the New York Knicks in the 2018–19 season. He missed a road game against the Toronto Raptors. This was after joining the Portland Trail Blazers later in the season for the same reason. The activism of Freedom has not only been focused on Turkish problems. Regarding a number of topics, particularly the NBA’s ties with China, he has also been harshly critical of the league.
Why did Enes Freedom, formerly Enes Kanter, change his name?
In the 2011 NBA Draft, Enes Freedom was selected third and played for 11 seasons. The 30-year-career old’s averages are 11.2 points and 7.8 rebounds, and he has represented five different teams. Enes Freedom was a rather good NBA player throughout his career. But his career is not what he is best known for. He is frequently brought up these days since he changed his name. He was first known as Enes Kanter.
During the 2021–22 season, Enes Freedom took the choice to alter his name. He took on the new last name after becoming a citizen of the United States. During an interview Enes said, “Here (in the U.S.), there is freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of expression, freedom of the press. I didn’t have any of those with Turkey.” Enes Freedom has moved around a lot throughout his life. Although his parents were Turkish, he was actually born in Switzerland. He was raised in Turkey. The future NBA center then immigrated to the United States as a teenager.
