The NBA announced on Sunday morning that Sacramento Kings guard Malik Monk had been fined $25,000. This was for the on-court fight with Houston Rockets player Garrison Matthews on Friday night. Monk and Matthews got into a physical altercation with one another with 11:09 left in the fourth quarter. This happened at Friday’s game at Golden 1 Center after the Rockets guard made contact with Monk while pursuing a loose ball.
Monk objected to the contact, which was called a foul on Matthews. He then pushed the ball out of Matthews’ hands before teammates, referees, and coaches had to separate the two. In the end, Monk and Matthews were dismissed from the match along with Kings forward Chimezie Metu for arguing with Houston’s bench players.
Two more Rockets players, guard Jalen Green and guard Jae’Sean Tate, have been suspended for leaving the bench and invading the court during the altercation. Matthews ($35,000) and forward Tari Eason ($30,000) were also fined. In response to the announcement, Metu, who was not penalised for his part in the events between the two teams, posted on social media to express his satisfaction at not having to dig into his wallet.
Domantas Sabonis has historic performance in Sacramento Kings’ win over Houston Rockets
This NBA season, the Houston Rockets have experienced several issues, and Domantas Sabonis became the latest on Friday. Sabonis demonstrated that no matter how the Rockets choose to guard the 26-year-old in Sacramento’s tough and physical 139-114 victory against Houston, it wasn’t enough. After the game was over, Sabonis finished with 19 points, a career-high 16 assists, and 15 rebounds.
According to the NBA, Oscar Robertson’s 28 points, 20 rebounds, and 16 assists against the New York Knicks as a member of the Cincinnati Royals on Jan. 6, 1965, was the most recent instance of a Kings player having 15 or more points, 15 or more rebounds, and 15 or more assists in the same game. “Pretty cool. Pretty cool,” Sabonis told reporters postgame. “Most important thing is that we ended up getting a win. It was two games back-to-back, tough ones, and happy we left with both victories.”
Robertson played in 15 such games throughout the course of his career, for context. Sabonis will go down in history alongside Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson. He also joined Boston Celtics great and Hall of Famer Larry Bird in an exclusive group. Sabonis is now one of just a select few players to have 19 points, 15 rebounds, 16 assists, two steals, and two blocks in a single game.
