“The issue was MONEY” Gary Payton II admitted to leave defending champions only because of monetary reasons

Gary Payton II was the surprise star out of Golden State Warriors‘ 2021-22 Season. The team had a terrific run together reaching heights they lost along with the 2019 NBA Finals. Injuries plagued the Dubs and the team had to tank for a top pick in the draft. Resurgence was assured but in due time.

Stephen Curry was the only superstar among fresh talent which led to a mediocre 2020-21 regular season. Last season saw a brand new, re-energised core with Curry leading the way. The Warriors were not far from injuries even during last season. In March, Steph endured a wrist sprain in a match against the Boston Celtics. He would not returned until the playoffs. Despite his brief exit, the Dubs were sure of a playoff spot. In the meanwhile, Jordan Poole and Klay Thompson took over offensively backed by Draymomd Green‘s defensive prowess.

However, in the playoffs while Golden State was all ready and focused to win, Gary Payton II endured a fractured left elbow against the Memphis Grizzlies during the second round of the playoffs. He was later ruled out until Game 2 versus the Celtics in the finals.

The emerging star averaged 7.1 points and 3.5 rebounds per game on 61.6% shooting from the field. His explosiveness made him a dormant threat waiting to explode at the right time. He had several impressive highlights and wonderful contributions on defense.

On entering free agency, Gary Payton II made the decision to sign a three-year $26.1 million contract with the Portland Trail Blazers. Recently, he revealed the true intent behind the signing. “For the money. I had to take the money. It didn’t work out. I would love to have gone back to Golden State, but it didn’t work out. Just the timing and everything. Just a business deal, and I just had to take the money.”
