Kyrie Irving of the Dallas Mavericks has had a difficult time lately. He has missed 11 games in a row due to a heel injury. Over the years, many have disparaged Irving’s character, but he has a history of using his platform for good. He recently made a sizable financial donation to help cover the cost of a medical procedure for someone in need.
A Ghanaian man in critical need of life-altering surgery was saved by the eight-time NBA All-Star. In an attempt to raise enough money for a kidney transplant, the family of Andrews Dzifa Amuzu recently established a GoFundMe page. Upon reading the narrative, Kyrie Irving decided to offer support. The All-Star guard gave $26,000 of his own money to help the family meet their financial needs. They had initially hoped to raise $25,000.
Irving’s donation is listed as anonymous, but the GoFundMe’s organizer disclosed that Kyrie was the one who sent the $26,000 and thanked Irving for his gesture. They said,
Thank you all who helped, and special thank you to Basketball Player Kyrie Irving for his $26,000 donation.
However, they also informed everyone that they are looking for a kidney donor and will update people about the Andrew’s health via their website.
The patient’s family turned to gofundme.com for assistance because they could not pay the $25,000 cost of the surgery. Thankfully, Irving learned of the situation and provided them with $26,000. Gofundme.com also disclosed that the family had only gotten $280 before Irving surprised them with his donation. The reporter for the Wings Bulletin Landon Thomas shared the specifics of Irving’s $26,000 donation to Andrews Dzifa Amuzu on his X handle.
Fans react to Kyrie Irving’s kidney transplant donation to a Ghanaian Patient
For some of his activities both on and off of the court in recent years, Irving has drawn a lot of criticism. Still, there is a reputation for the former No. 1 pick being incredibly willing to donate to charitable causes. The recent donation is merely another act in a long range of generous things that the player has done through his career.
Fans are very happy with Irving’s gesture and his devotion to helping others. A range of social media users commended the act on social media. One fan in particular talked about the lack of attention that Irving had received, claiming that “The National media won’t ever mention this.”
Following his nearly season-ending dispute with teammate Dwight Powell, when the Mavs center stumbled onto Kyrie’s leg during a play, Kyrie missed 12 straight games with the Dallas Mavericks. Since then, he has been sidelined due to a heel contusion. However, recent reports indicate that he should be back in the lineup by the end of the week, possibly even for tonight’s Mavericks vs. Jazz game.
