“I got one, I got one,” Giannis Antetokounmpo is on cloud nine following his maiden All-Star Game victory against LeBron James
Giannis Antetokounmpo finally got a win against Team LeBron, handing the Lakers star his first defeat in six All-Star games as captain.
Giannis huggling LeBron James
Giannis Antetokounmpo and LeBron James were selected as captains of the 2023 All-Star teams this season. Greek Freak was playing The King as the opposing captain for the third time, having lost the previous two games against him. The two-time MVP had told the media a week before the game that he didn’t want to go 0-3 against James. His wish came true as Team Giannis defeated Team LeBron in a high-scoring game. The Milwaukee Bucks star could not hold his emotions while hugging the Los Angeles Lakers star after the game.
The stars gathered at the Vivint Smart Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah, for one of the season’s most high-profile matchups. And Giannis had a promise to keep. Following a 175-184 victory over Team James, Giannis rushed towards the 19-time All-Star. While he hugged him tightly, he exclaimed, “I got one, I got one.” When it comes to acting like a true general manager in the All-Star game, James is unrivalled, and possibly no one is better than him. He can surround himself with guys that can not only enhance their game but also feed off of his playmaking abilities.
Before playing LeBron as captain, Giannis had won none of his All-Star games against the King, who had a 6-0 record as a captain. “My goal is to beat LeBron [in the All-Star Game]. … I cannot be 0-3 against him,” Giannis had said. The King now holds a 2-1 lead against the Greek Freak, and if both lead the All-Star voting again, one will seek to equalise the score, while the other will look to expand the lead.
Jayson Tatum saves Giannis Antetokounmpo from another loss against LeBron James
Despite being questionable for the All-Star game, Antetokounmpo made his seventh appearance but only played 20 seconds, scoring two points. However, the rest of his team carried the offensive load, especially Jayson Tatum.
Both the teams scored 46 points in the first quarter, However, Team Giannis took a big lead at the end of the third quarter when they outplayed Team LeBron by 17 points in the second and third quarters combined. Despite trying to make a comeback in the last quarter, LeBron and Co. fell to Giannis.
After the conclusion of the fourth quarter, Jayson Tatum was named the MVP of the All-Star game. He scored record-breaking 55 points for his team, taking down Anthony Davis’s 52 points record. He was extremely efficient, shooting 22 of 31 from the field. He also grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out six assists.
“It means the world,” Tatum said. After receiving the trophy, which is named after his hero Kobe Bryant, he added, “I’ll hold it [record] for as long as I can, but I’m certain someone will come along in a couple years and try to break it.“
