Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future with the Milwaukee Bucks was uncertain throughout this offseason as he contemplated his time with the team due to their disappointing seasons after their 2021 championship win. The front office convinced him to stay with the team after they traded for Damian Lillard and finally got him to sign him to a supermax extension to stay with the team.
Giannis signed a three-year, $186 million extension, which will extend his stay with the Bucks till the 2027-28 NBA season. This allows Giannis to increase his career earnings to over $450 million. While it’s great for Giannis to sign the best deal possible and secure the most he can as soon as possible, according to Justin Termine of SiriusXM, this wasn’t the best financial decision from Giannis.
When talking about the extension that Giannis signed, Termine said that Giannis could have waited for a season and signed a four-year $234 million extension and earned him an extra $50 million on top of what he currently signed. Termine considers this to be a bad move from Giannis who could have secured more money if he signed the extension next offseason.
Termine said:
He gives up money in order to do it [signing the extension]. So, he signs for three-years $186 million, which will take throught the 2027-28 season. If he waited until next offseason, he could have signed for significantly more money upto four years $234 million… Really, financially it doesn’t make sense.
How did the Bucks front office convince Giannis Antetokounmpo to stay?
Giannis Antetokounmpo was very public about his dissatisfaction with the Bucks front office and their decisions after the team’s disappointing exit from the first round this past season. He gave an ultimatum to the Bucks that if they don’t improve the roster and bring it back to title contender position, he will request a trade from the organization.
The Bucks were quick to act on not losing a once-in-a-lifetime talent in Giannis and decided to make big moves to get him to sign the supermax extension. They made one of the most unexpected trades of the offseason and traded for Damian Lillard.
This move ultimately convinced Giannis that the Bucks were committed to winning championships like him. This trade not only brought the Bucks Lillard but also guaranteed that Giannis would sign a huge contract which could be beneficial for them even if Giannis demands a trade in the future
