Russell Westbrook and Gordon Hayward

Gordon Hayward of the Charlotte Hornets recently liked a tweet recommending that the Los Angeles Lakers trade Russell Westbrook for him and a handful of additional components. A screenshot of Hayward’s liked Tweet was uploaded on the Twitter account Lakers All Day Everyday. The initial tweet suggested a Lakers-Hornets trade.

Russell Westbrook being traded to the Hornets in exchange for Gordon Hayward, PJ Washington, and Kelly Oubre would not be too bad. Over the last year, there has been no shortage of trade speculation concerning Russell Westbrook. Possible trades with the Indiana Pacers and Utah Jazz have been discussed on NBA Twitter. However, a deal with Charlotte may make sense for LA as they need to add wing depth.

To begin the season, the Lakers’ lack of shooting depth has been widely addressed. Stephen A. Smith was brutally honest about Los Angeles’ shooting problems. “LeBron James and Anthony Davis, they’re kicking it out to open shooters y’all, they’re making open shots, they’re missing open shots. That is not something you can rectify. If you can’t shoot, you can’t shoot. You better get a deal done because this is on the verge of a disaster.”

This season, Westbrook has struggled once again with the Lakers. According to NBA speculations, the Lakers may wait to move Westbrook until more clubs become sellers in the trade market. Given the fact that Victor Wembanyama and Scoot Henderson’s negotiations are heating up, this seems plausible.

How Gordon Hayward could potentially help the Lakers

To enhance their squad, the Los Angeles Lakers sorely need additional shooting and frontcourt depth. Due to a lack of frontcourt depth, Darvin Ham has been forced to use three-guard lines in his first two games. Due to a lack of size in their frontcourt rotation, the Lakers have struggled on the boards.

A possible trade including Gordon Hayward, PJ Washington, and Kelly Oubre Jr. addresses the Los Angeles Lakers frontcourt, shooting, and wing depth. All three players stand 6’7″. Hayward and Washington have a career 37% average from deep. Meanwhile, Oubre is one of the league’s greatest 3-and-D wings.

Playing in Los Angeles has always been an appealing option for many players, and Hayward appears to be no exception. He would also have a higher chance of winning a championship with the Lakers due to LeBron James’ presence on the team. Finally, the Hornets may be the ones to turn down this prospective trade. Given Russell Westbrook’s problems, one would think the Lakers would go for it.
