“Greatness doesn’t shake his head” – Suns HC Monty Williams encouraged Kevin Durant after sluggish start during his home debut

Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant returned from an ankle injury last night for his home debut and did not get off to a great start. KD started the game 0/6 from the field and was not able to find his rhythm against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Monty Williams spoke to KD and said – “What you shaking your head for? It’s part of it. Greatness doesn’t shake his head.”

KD was playing his first game in Phoenix since his arrival early this year, and despite his slow start, the Suns managed to win. The Slim Reaper made his first field goal in the second quarter and scored 16 points. He was still on a minute restriction as he did not want to be rushed right after his ankle recovered. The 2x Finals MVP usually does not need extra encouragement, but Monty Williams’ words seemed to help him.

Durant picked up the pace in the second half as he went 5/12 after missing his first six shots and made two threes in the fourth quarter to end his night on the floor. KD seemed to take time to find his rhythm as he is not used to a minute restriction, which breaks the flow of his game. The Phoenix Suns secured the victory on the back of Devin Booker’s 29 points.

The Phoenix Suns beat the Timberwolves 100-107 in a low-scoring game to ensure the Los Angeles Clippers do not leapfrog them to the 4th seed. The Clippers played right before the Suns on Wednesday night and picked up a tough win thanks to a Russell Westbrook masterpiece. The Suns were down by as many as 10 points in the third quarter and clawed their way back.

The Clippers and Suns will indeed play each other in the first round, and being 0.5 games within each other makes every game count. Home-court advantage is on the line for these teams, as whoever gets the 4th seed will start at home in the first round. Booker shot slightly better than KD on 8/18 compared to KD’s 5/18, but Booker got to the line for 15 free throw attempts for his 29 points.

The Phoenix Suns are a much better team with Kevin Durant, as seen during his first three games for the franchise. KD will slowly get his minute restriction lifted and will look to get back to his scoring best. Riding on a three-game win streak, the Suns face the #1 Denver Nuggets next in a matchup with massive implications for the Western Conference.
