“This doesn’t play out, if Ime Udoka were white” Al Horford’s sister calls out racism in support of former Celtics coach

“This doesn’t play out, if Ime Udoka were white” Al Horford’s sister calls out racism in support of former Celtics coach

Ime Udoka, Al Horford's sister

Ime Udoka, the coach of the Boston Celtics, has been suspended for the 2022–23 season after it was discovered that he had an alleged consensual relationship with a female employee of the organization. However, the team’s forward Al Horford‘s sister claims that Ime’s suspension was unfair because of his race.

Ime Udoka became the Boston Celtics’ head coach in June 2021, and in his first season with the team, he guided them to the NBA Finals. The Celtics had not advanced to the NBA Finals since 2010, but all changed in 2022. Udoka, the passionate coach of the Boston Celtics, has been suspended for a year for acting improperly inside the company just after Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver’s allegations. The Celtics stated on Thursday that Udoka had been suspended with immediate effect for violating the organization’s rules and that a decision about his future with the team beyond this season will be made at a later time. However, Anna Horford claims differently.

Ime Udoka’s historic 2021-22 season with the Celtics

One of the most surprising teams in recent NBA history was Ime Udoka’s Boston Celtics in 2021–2022. Midway through January, the Celtics were out of the Eastern Conference playoff picture, but after that, the season started to improve. Boston finished the regular season with a record of 26-6 to clinch the No. 2 seed in the postseason. The Boston Celtics eliminated the reigning champion Milwaukee Bucks in the semifinals despite trailing a surprise sweep of the Brooklyn Nets in the opening round. With a victory against the Miami Heat in Game 7 of the Conference Finals, the Boston Celtics earned a spot in the NBA Finals for the first time since 2010.

The NBA Finals marked the conclusion of the Celtics’ incredible run. The Golden State Warriors won their fourth title in eight years despite having various series leads. The Warriors won three straight games to win the series, including games four and six in Boston. Udoka brought with him a defensive mindset. Although he may be harsh with players in person and in the media, they admire his style. Particularly in the second half of the season when they turned things around and kept the second seed in the East, Udoka assisted the Celtics in becoming a title contender. In the playoffs, he competed for the championship against legendary coaches Erik Spoelstra, Mike Budenholzer, and Steve Kerr.

Al Horford’s sister comes in aid for Udoka in light of the recent allegations

Anna Horford has emerged as one of the most outspoken and well-known figures in the NBA world which was seen mainly during his stint with OKC and this year’s NBA Finals. However this time, she has addressed a more widespread matter involving her brother’s team’s head coach, who will spend a year away from the court after speculatively involved in a consensual relationship with a Celtics co – worker. Now, if we contrast Udoka’s suspension for a consensual affair to Sarver’s penalty for racist crimes, it would appear to be a little harsher. However, that does not imply that this act of dishonesty and improper conduct should have been tolerated.

The Boston Celtics will most certainly punish Ime Udoka for the full 2022–2023 season, and the head coach even considered quitting. Joe Mazzulla, who will act as the interim head coach while Udoka is suspended, is expected to take his position. Although Udoka proved to be the ideal replacement for Brad Stevens, the suspension may irreparably damage his standing in the league. As the start of the season on October 18 draws near, the controversy is also another one for the NBA.
