As the NBA pre-season gains momentum, off-court events are overshadowing some of the biggest professional milestones. The latest involves Houston Rockets’ newly appointed head coach, Ime Udoka. The 46-year-old’s personal life gained center stage just as he appeared ready to guide the Rockets into a new era. Former Boston Celtics head coach Udoka is currently involved in a court dispute with his ex-wife, renowned actress Nia Long.
The couple, who had a son named Kez, 11, saw their 13-year marriage come to an end as a result of news of Udoka’s alleged affair with a Celtics employee. This Monday, 52-year-old Long filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles, asking for sole custody of their son. Citing concerns over Udoka’s ability to support Kez, Long has argued for regular visits from Udoka in the child’s best interests.
Following his success in leading the Celtics to the NBA Finals in 2022, Udoka faced personal difficulties. Scandal ruined what should have been a great achievement. Udoka was suspended by the Celtics in September and finally replaced by Joe Mazzulla .

After his dramatic exit from Boston, the Houston Rockets, amidst their rebuilding phase, showed confidence in Udoka by offering him a four-year deal worth $28.5 million. Given that the Rockets are building up their roster, this choice appears to be calculated. Notable new additions include veterans Fred VanVleet, Jeff Green, and former Grizzlies guard Dillon Brooks, who sealed a significant 4-year, $80 million contract.
Houston’s intent is also clear from their draft selections. Amen Thompson and Cam Whitmore, picked 4th and 20th respectively, are hailed as the next big names in the NBA. They join a roster of rising stars like Jalen Green and Alperen Şengun.
As Udoka prepares to shape this promising team, it remains to be seen if off-court distractions will impact his tenure with the Rockets.
