Some names that are part of the generation that ruled the NBA before this generation were Isiah ThomasLarry Bird, Michael Jordan, and Magic Johnson. This was the time when NBA got the limelight it deserved and was made famous by these guys. What comes along with popularity is greater scrutiny and all public’s eyes on you.

A victim of this was Magic Johnson, who, during his NBA life in 1991, was diagnosed with HIV in 1991. He immediately retired and became someone who would go on to impact the lives of people diagnosed with HIV-AIDS, by advocating for its awareness among people.

Isiah Thomas and Johnson are supposedly friends, but Johnson was seemingly unhappy with his friend’s reaction to him getting diagnosed with HIV. He relied on support from his family and friends but was disappointed when Thomas said this.

He anticipated that there will be support from his friends, including Thomas as the two had been close friends. After he got diagnosed with HIV, Magic’s life changed and with it, changed his friend’s opinion too. Lon Rosen, Magic’s agent told him about how Isiah questioned the disease, which saddened Johnson.

Isiah was going out asking if Magic was gay or not. His sexuality was questioned by Thomas, which hurt him. “I keep hearing Magic is gay” to which Rosen replied, “C’mon, Isiah, you know Earvin better than anyone.” Finally, Thomas replied, “I know, but I don’t know what he’s doing when he’s out there in LA.”

Ever since then, their friendship did not survive much. He talked about this in his book “When The Game Was Ours”, to which Thomas replied that Magic was misled by someone and was lied to. Whether or not Rosen was speaking the truth cannot be made sure, but one thing is for sure – Johnson sure was hurt.
