The PGA tour’s merger with the Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf has stirred up quite a controversy. LIV Golf is financed by the Public Investment Fund, the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia. Many believe that this is an attempt by the Saudi monarchy to improve its reputation via sports and athletics. This is due to speculations and allegations of corruption and human rights abuses by said monarchy. After the PGA tour merged with LIV, many have stood up in protest in criticism of the move.
Many people believe that partnering up with a body funded by money made from abuse is immoral and shouldn’t be promoted. Many, on the other hand, believe that bringing in the technicality of immorality makes the argument hypocritical. Former NBA player J. R. Smith pointed this out exactly while he spoke about his view on the issue. Smith was on Par 3 Podcast when he opened up about the PGA tour and LIV merger.
“I’m American. We’re capitalist. It’s just what it is. When we sit here and look at it and try to boil it down, this money comes from here this money comes from there. All of this land that we live on now is built off of slaves. So if we really wanna get technical with it, if you really wanna talk about it, how are you gonna sit here and tell me that we’re better than them because this is where their money came from, from filth. Okay if that’s the case our money came from filth as well,” Smith explained.
Smith then went on to say, “I hate to break it to you and go through that barrier but it is what it is. I’m not gonna sit here and sugarcoat and be like ‘oh no you shouldn’t take 400 million because this money X,Y and Z. No bro, I’m taking 400 million because you took 400 million 400 years ago.”

Did J. R. Smith win an NBA Championship?

J. R. Smith has been one of the more respected players in the NBA. Smith was drafted by the New Orleans Hornets in the 2004 NBA Draft as the 18th overall pick. Since his rookie season, Smith played for a number of teams around the league. He built the reputation of a formidable scorer, but unfortunately, he didn’t manage to win a ring in the first 10 years of his career.
Smith joined LeBron James at the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2015. The Cavaliers were one of the strongest teams in the league, and James was at his undoubted prime. Winning the Eastern Conference Finals, the Cavs met the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals and lost to the young core. However, a year later, Smith would win his first NBA championship after being a part of a historic comeback from a 3-1 deficit against the very same opponents.
Smith retired after the 2019-2020 season right after winning his second NBA championship ring. Although he played for the Los Angeles Lakers by then, he was still alongside LeBron, who won his fourth ring that year with Anthony Davis winning his first.
