With the 2023-24 NBA season right around the corner, Ja Morant‘s Memphis Grizzlies has bumped into a new problem. Grizzlies big man Steven Adams will miss the entire season and will undergo a surgery on the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, as confirmed by the Grizzlies organization.

It seems that Adams’ January knee injury, which prevented him from playing in the second half of that season and the playoffs, is related to the operation.

After getting hurt while diving for a loose ball against the Phoenix Suns, his initial recovery time was estimated to be three to five weeks. He had to miss the entire 2022–2023 season, nevertheless, as a result of the ongoing knee instability. About his full recovery by the 2024–25 season, the Grizzlies expressed optimism.

Adams signed a two-year, $25.2 million contract extension at training camp the previous year, tying him to the team through the 2024–25 campaign. He has averaged 7.5 points and 10.6 rebounds per game since joining the Grizzlies in the 2021 summer, and had a big impact. Though the organization is optimistic about his recovery, his extended absence begs questions about the Grizzlies’ roster and their capacity to play competitively without him.

Despite NBPA opposition, NBA upholds Ja Morant’s 25-Game Suspension

The news that Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant’s 25-game suspension will not be lifted shocked Memphis Grizzlies supporters. This was confirmed by NBA authorities recently. The suspension was put in place because Morant was involved in two instances in which he was observed brandishing a gun: in an Instagram Live video at a nightclub in March, and in a car in May.

The NBA affirmed the ruling despite criticism from NBPA Executive Director Tamika Tremaglio, who called the penalty “excessive.” NBA Executive Vice President Joe Dumars emphasized the collaborative efforts between the league, Players Association, Morant, and his team, aiming to facilitate Morant’s smooth return to the league.

The details of the league-mandated program that Morant needs to finish are yet unknown, but they are crucial to his reinstatement. As previously said by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, Morant needs to participate in a program that addresses the underlying causes of his behavior.

Morant’s ban will end after 25 games provided he complies with the program’s criteria. This will allow him to return to the squad on December 19 against the New Orleans Pelicans. With big man Steven Adams also sidelined for an entire season to undergo knee surgery, fans now wonder how this choice will affect Morant’s ability to play for the Grizzlies in the future.
