Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant has finally spoken out about the gun scandal that has rocked the NBA over the past few weeks. In a sit-down interview with ESPN broadcaster and former NBA star Jalen Rose, Morant revealed that the gun he brandished on an Instagram Live stream was not his own.
While the fact that the gun was not Morant’s has some implications concerning league protocols, it does not excuse his irresponsible behavior on social media. Morant seemed to understand this and took full responsibility for his actions during the interview.
“The gun wasn’t mine,” Morant admitted. “It’s not who I am. I don’t condone in any type of violence, but I take full responsibility for my actions. I’ve made a bad mistake.”
This scandal began when Morant posted a video on Instagram showing off a handgun while aboard a private plane. The video quickly went viral, and Morant faced widespread criticism from fans, pundits, and fellow players.
The NBA has strict rules regarding weapons possession, and if the gun had belonged to Morant, he could have faced a 50-game suspension from the league. However, since the gun was not his, he hasn’t been subjected to severe punishment from the NBA.
