“Even the refs are trolling Simmons” Ja Morant toying with Ben Simmons only to set the bait and fouling him out has left NBA fans in splits
Ben Simmons guarding Ja Morant
Ben Simmons‘ Brooklyn Nets campaign hasn’t exactly gotten off to the player’s amazing start, and that was once again evident in a recent appearance by the young sensation. In today’s game, Memphis Grizzlies’ Ja Morant lured Simmons into committing a foul, which led to him fouling out of the game.
The Grizzlies were desperate to return on Monday night after an ugly 41-point defeat to the Dallas Mavericks over the weekend. They succeeded admirably in doing so, defeating the visiting Nets 134–124 in one of the opening week’s most exciting games. Ja Morant has exceptional game understanding and excels as a floor general playmaker, which was on full show tonight as he guided the team to victory. But what really stuck out was a specific play, which gave them the upper hand over the visitors.
When Morant tricked Ben Simmons into committing his sixth foul late in the fourth quarter, it was one of the most exciting plays he was a part of all evening. In order to keep the game clock running when the shot clock was still running, Morant let the ball move up the floor without touching it during the final quarter with about 4 minutes left. The Grizzlies guard then got a foul to send Simmons to the sideline as Simmons pinned up to induce Morant to pick up the ball.
Grizzlies edge out Nets in a last quarter showdown
On Monday night, Ja Morant and Desmond Bane both scored 38 points to lead the Memphis Grizzlies past the Brooklyn Nets 134-124 and also, they both each recorded seven assists. The guard duo of the Grizzlies scored 76 points, which set a franchise record in which Santi Aldama scored 17 points to add to the scoresheet. Bane, who had trouble making shots to open the season, finished the game with a career-high eight 3-pointers while shooting 14 of 21 overall.
Durant scored 37 points on a stunning 14 of 20 shooting performance, including a third quarter total of 15 points. While Irving was locked in from all three levels of the floor, he basically kept his team in the game. After a scoreless third quarter, Kyrie made his impact in the fourth quarter when Durant took a rest, scoring 19 of his team-high 37 points in that period. Ben Simmons, the third player in Brooklyn’s all-star trio, had another underwhelming performance, scoring only seven points and fouling out twice in three games.
NBA fans with the ultimate reactions on Ja Morant’s play on Ben Simmons
Following the game, Morant said he was ready for that occasion because of a play from his rookie year. He said: “My rookie year it was in Philly, the same situation happened like that vs. Ben. In the first half I went to look at coach to get the ball and he ran through the ball, got the steal and went and dunked. I knew it at that moment, I was rolling the ball and I looked at coach and I see him try to look like, ‘oh yeah.’ So I knew I had him. He was gonna press up and I was gonna force the ref to make the call.”
This is how the fans around YouTube responded to the play:
Fans around twitter had their fair share of reactions too:
Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies should hopefully have a great season. The squad wants to advance far in the playoffs this year, so we’ll have to wait and see whether they can. But, Ben Simmons still has plenty of time left this season to turn things around; however, things haven’t gone well for him so far though.
