The ongoing saga involving James Harden and the Philadelphia 76ers shows no signs of resolution, even as the new NBA season approaches. Amid the uncertainty surrounding Harden’s future in Philly, there are concerns that the ripple effects could extend to the front office.
According to a latest report, Daryl Morey‘s position as the Sixers’ GM may be in jeopardy due to the ongoing drama. The source goes on to assert that with tensions escalating, it’s unlikely that both the front office and Morey will emerge unscathed from this situation.
Oh, man, they are f***ed. I’m telling you what, they are screwed. Daryl Morey’s not going to survive this.
one front office source told Heavy Sports.
Harden, whose association with 76ers President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey dates back to the trade that brought him to the Houston Rockets from the Oklahoma City Thunder before the 2012-13 season, made headlines when he referred to Morey as a “liar” during a shoe event in China in August.
On October 13, Harden made it clear that there was no possibility of repairing his relationship with Morey and the front office.
Harden has been growing increasingly frustrated for months as his desire to be traded to the LA Clippers remains unfulfilled. As a form of protest, he arrived late to training camp and did practice with the 76ers before eventually missing practices last week.
James Harden’s status for 76ers season opener against the Bucks still unclear
Philadelphia 76ers star James Harden is still absent from the team, and there is growing uncertainty about his availability for their season opener against the Bucks, as reported by ESPN on Monday. The 76ers held their first practice on Monday since their preseason finale, which Harden missed due to a personal matter, as stated by the team.
In fact, 76ers coach Nick Nurse informed reporters last week that he has been preparing for the possibility of playing without Harden for a while.
He said:
Lots of thought has gone into him not playing and preparing the team that way this summer. I keep saying, ‘there is another plan if something changes.’ I don't think it's affected us very much at all. We've just gone out and played, and we're going to have to go out and play the way we're trying to play. I think that is without [him] until something changes.
The possibility of Harden joining the Clippers also remains uncertain. Previous reports suggested that both parties were locked in a trade impasse, primarily because the Clippers were reluctant to include Terance Mann in the deal.
With the 2023-24 season ready to tip off, it’ll be interesting to see what the future has in store for Harden and the 76ers.
