The tensions between James Harden and the Philadelphia 76ers have been escalating since Harden’s trade request to the Los Angeles Clippers was declined. The 76ers ended trade talks with the Clippers due to the lack of significant offers. Despite the Sixers’ plan to include Harden in the training camp, he intends to hold out and not play for them next season.
After returning from a tour in China, during which he conducted a sneaker promotion tour for his signature collection with Adidas, Harden referred to 76ers President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey as a liar. This accusation stemmed from Morey’s failure to fulfil a promise made to Harden, assuring him a trade if he opted into his contract. Due to this breach of trust, Harden conveyed his reluctance to play for any team connected to Morey. Harden is currently in Houston, engaged in his charity event “JH-Town Weekend.”
During a recent interview with KHOU 11’s Jason Bristol, Harden was questioned about his communication with the Philadelphia 76ers’ front office and his patience in handling this situation. He responded that he has displayed enough patience and is focusing on preparing for the upcoming season. When asked if the relationship with the 76ers is irreparable, Harden’s reply was, “I think so.”
What happened between James Harden and Philadelphia 76ers?
James Harden, among the league’s most talented players and a former MVP, recently concluded a disappointing season with the Philadelphia 76ers, having been traded from the Brooklyn Nets. His playoff run ended in the second round, prompting his trade request from the Sixers due to their inability to offer a long-term max deal.
Despite a prior $15 million pay cut to facilitate player signings and bolster team depth, the 76ers reportedly assured Harden a max contract. However, they didn’t extend him a contract this offseason. Following this, Harden sought a trade after choosing his $35.6 million player option, enabling a trade for mutual benefit.
Despite initial trade talks with the Clippers, the 76ers opted to retain Harden for the upcoming training camp, frustrating him. During his China tour, he criticized 76ers President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey as a liar and vowed not to play under Morey’s leadership. Refusing to play for the Sixers next season might result in a ban from signing with any professional basketball team affiliated with the organization. Harden’s future remains intriguing.
