Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic was a shining star in the 2022 playoffs but former Chicago Bulls player Jay Williams won’t mention Luka Doncic in the same breath as LeBron James out of respect for the latter believes it diminishes the greatness of Los Angeles Lakers superstar. Mavs shocked the NBA world by defeating Phoenix Suns in the Western Conference Semifinals, while Luka Doncic emerged as a difference-maker for the team. This entire postseason, Luka was among the best players in the league. Even though the Dallas Mavericks’ lost the conference finals series against the Golden State Warriors, Luka caught the eye with his 3rd consecutive postseason scoring 30+ points.
He was an offensive driving force for the Mavs and their success to date. He even got compared with some of the greats of the game like LeBron James. But Jay Williams thinks otherwise as he feels the Slovenian has a long way to go in the league before which it is not acceptable for him to be compared with the greatest ever.
As per Jay Williams, LeBron is far superior to Luka and he is fed up with the comparisons. He even calls it disrespectful to LeBron’s greatness and he won’t take Luka’s name in the same breath as LBJ.
Luka Doncic is drawing comparisons with LeBron James and Larry Bird
23-Years old Luka has achieved many records at a very young age and is destined to be one of the best players in the league. Just like his European success, he made a huge stride in the NBA and made his mark with consistent performances and offensive displays. He was compared to Larry Bird for his shooting efficiency, which Luka himself later humbly denied.
Another megastar he was compared with was LA Lakers forward LeBron James. His name was very often mentioned when making comparisons to Luka Doncic. This could also be considered as high praise for the Slovenian as James is certainly in Top-3 players of all time.
In this postseason, Luka Doncic led the NBA in points per game at 31.7, playing just 15 games in total. On top of that, he averaged 9.8 rebounds, 6.4 assists, and 1.8 steals. The Mavericks guard is flourishing in every aspect of the game and thereby on the fast track to superstardom. His huge postseasons are compared to LBJ as the great one is also a beast in the postseason games.
But one person who is not a fan of this comparison is ESPN’s, Jay Williams. He recently went on a tangent about how putting Luka Doncic in the same company as James is disrespectful. He said, “I’m done even putting Lukas name in the same breath comparison wise similarity wise to LeBron out of sheer respect for one of the greatest players ever seen to play the game of basketball.”
Though Luka’s achievements have not drawn any title yet, his performance can draw similar comparisons to what LeBron James did with the Cleveland Cavaliers back in 2007. Following the footsteps of the King, he might end up with multiple championship rings before hanging the shoes.
But to compare two superstars, who won Rookie of the year awards, make All NBA teams from the following seasons, led their team to the playoffs, and even carry most of the offensive load, puts Luka on the right path. That being said, he still has a long way to go to reach LBJ’s level.
Jay points out one glaring difference between the two as LBJ has always kept himself in top physical condition, while Luka had some injury concerns right from the early days. That may affect his longevity in the league. LeBron personally though praised Luka and even said that the Mavs star reminds him of the way he plays the game, which could encourage Doncic.
