“He made a mistake” Jaylen Brown is ‘expecting’ Kyrie Irving to be exempted of his suspension to make a return to basketball

Jaylen Brown and Kyrie Irving
Jaylen Brown recently offered his opinion on the Brooklyn Nets’ decision to suspend point guard Kyrie Irving for endorsing an antisemitic movie and refusing to apologize. Brown is the vice president of the National Basketball Players’ Association and a member of the Boston Celtics team. He stated that the union had issues with the conditions set forth for Kyrie Irving’s return to the Brooklyn Nets in an interview with the Boston Globe on Monday. The Players Association also intends to challenge Irving’s punishment.
In the interview, Brown said, βI don’t believe Kyrie Irving is antisemitic. I don’t think people in our governing bodies think he’s antisemitic. He made a mistake. We understand from an outside perspective how important sensitivity is to not condone hate speech… but I don’t believe Kyrie Irving is antisemitic. And hopefully, the NBA feels the same way.β
Brown also talked about the rules of language use in the CBA, βThere is an interesting distinction between what somebody says verbally and what somebody posts as a link on a platform with no description behind it... There’s no language in our CBA. There’s no rules against it. This is uncharted territory for everybody, and everybody is trying to figure out the difference between the two.β
Brown also said that a good number of players in the league are not comfortable with the terms that the Nets have put forward for Kyrie. He also remarked that the terms of return were a lot saying, βI’m expecting the NBPA to appeal the suspension from Brooklyn. The terms, etc., that went into his return. The terms for his return, they seem like a lot, and a lot of the players expressed discomfort with the terms.β Brown played 2 seasons with Kyrie Irving in Boston before Irving left for Brooklyn.
On Nov. 3, the Nets suspended Irving for at least five games because he had repeatedly refused to denounce antisemitism and express regret for sharing a link to a movie with antisemitic tropes. Irving won’t be permitted to rejoin the club “until he satisfies a series of objective remedial measures that address the harmful impact of his conduct,” according to the team’s release.Β
Twitter is divided over Jaylen Brownβs take on Kyrie Irving’s suspension from the Nets

Jaylon Brown’s recent thoughts on his former teammate Kyrie Irvingβs situation have left Twitter users divided. In his interview with the Boston Globe Brown remarked that he didnβt believe Kyrie Irving was antisemitic. Brown also stated that the terms of Kyrieβs return that were issued by the Brooklyn Nets were βa lotβ.Β
According to Brown, the punishment wasnβt fair in the view of the NBPA because the NBAβs collective bargaining agreement doesn’t have a language addressing social media remarks. While Brown also cleared that he or the NBPA does not support hate speech but he did not believe Irving was antisemitic. Brown said, βWe donβt want to stand up for somebody in order to not condemn hate speech, but I donβt believe Kyrie Irving is antisemitic. And hopefully the NBA feels the same way.β
Reacting to Brown’s statement several Twitter users stormed social media to express their opinion. Largely Twitter remained divided in opinions. One user wrote, “Nets should do the right thing and cut him. Let him sign where he wants. List is a joke“, whereas another remarked, “So he supports being Anti Semitism?” Questioning where NBPA’s heart lies, another user wrote, “Iβm getting the feeling NBA players association members might have a rampant anti-semite problem.” Here are some reactions from Twitter:
