“RACISM is an excuse Black People use when they are not successful” Kareem Abdul-Jabbar got honest on Byron Scott receiving backlash

Byron Scott and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has made his way back to the NBA headlines but this time it’s not because of him criticizing an athlete from any sport because of his personal decisions. Instead, he was backing up his teammate Byron Scott against the backlash he received during the 1992 Los Angeles Riots. Both Bryon Scott and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar were teammates at the Lakers for good seven years and even won three championships together.

Byron Scott played the role of a great supporting cast backing up Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar during the showtime era. But things went down and bad for him after he made some comments on the 1992 Los Angeles Riots. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic both were retired during that time and Byron Scott was a crucial piece of the team going ahead in the league. The riots took place after Rodney King, an African-American was beaten up by four LAPD officers for around 15 minutes after a high-speed chase for driving under the influence.

The court though didn’t entertain any of the evidence and released the four officers which meant straight injustice towards the African-American society. The riots took place for six days and even Byron Scott gave his comments on it. He sympathized with the protestors for the injustice and mentioned how he can feel what they felt. These comments of him brought him to the center of action and he was criticized a lot. Recently, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar discussed that particular situation after the release of “Legacy: The True Story of LA Lakers”.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar discussing the incident wrote: “Back then, the popular consensus was that cops could do no wrong and that racism was an excuse Black people used when they weren’t successful…Every Black person on the Lakers and across America understood how the protestors felt: angry, frustrated, unsafe, hopeless. Saying so publicly took a lot of courage, something Byron has in abundance…”

Finally, Byron Scott got the correct recognition he deserved for decades and that came from his G.O.A.T Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Racism was really a big deal back in the days, especially in the 80s and 90s and it will always be. But today African-Americans have overcome a lot of it and thanks to many great personalities from Black History they fought against social injustice and tried to bring equality in the society. But unfortunately, even today the bad element exists and efforts are made to completely wipe it off.
