Kevin Durant calls Kyrie Irving’s trade request from the Brooklyn Nets “a blow to our team”
In his introductory press conference as a member of the Phoenix Suns, Kevin Durant said that Kyrie Irving's trade request was a blow for the Nets and him.
Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant
Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving had an opportunity to win it all in Brooklyn. However, in a recent turn of events, Irving requested a trade from the team, which landed him with the Dallas Mavericks. This eventually pushed Durant to ask for a trade, which landed him at Phoenix Suns. Speaking of his time with the Brooklyn Nets, Durant said he didn’t know what was going on with his former teammate.
Durant stated during his first press conference as a Suns player that he finally believed the Nets had strong momentum and were heading in the right direction. So not being able to finish was obviously upsetting for him. “Yeah, I was upset that we couldn’t finish. I thought we had good momentum,” he said. He also added that the Nets were finally building a winning culture, which could have altered the course of the team. “We were finally building the culture we always wanted.”
He also finally discussed his disappointment with Irving’s departure from the team. Durant highlighted that he had no knowledge about the problems that were there between the guard and the Nets organization. He further noted that Irving’s trade request was a major setback for the team. “I didn’t know what was going on with Kyrie and his situation with the [Nets]… It was a blow to our team,” he stated.
Kevin Durant says Phoenix Suns have a chance to win the championship
The Phoenix Suns’ prospects of winning the NBA title have skyrocketed since Kevin Durant brought his talents to the Valley. He told the media in Phoenix that the team already has all of the necessary pieces to be successful and win a championship.
“I think we’ve got all the pieces to be successful. We’ve got guys that experienced what it’s like to play in that final round. We got a champion [Jones] already that’s overseeing us. Monty is a champion as a coach,” he said. The Suns reached the finals in 2021 but were defeated by the Milwaukee Bucks.
The former MVP was all appreciative of his new teammates. “So we’ve got guys that been there, and that’s half the battle, just knowing what it takes. We’ve got guys that can do pretty much everything on the floor, so we’ve got to put it together and I’m looking forward to going to work,” Durant remarked.
With the acquisition of the 13-time NBA All-Star, the Suns have emerged as the team to beat in the West for many. However, the depth of their postseason run will be determined by the chemistry they create over time.
