Golden State Warriors shooter Klay Thompson recently voiced profound disappointment after their most recent playoff loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. When Thompson thought back on the loss, he acknowledged that his Southern California upbringing, the rivalry with the Lakers, and his desire to outperform LeBron James, a long-time rival, made it especially painful.
Throughout the series, Thompson bemoaned his personal struggles. He acknowledged the necessity to depend on his colleagues and strategic acumen as he gets older and listed tiredness as a major contributing factor.
“I learned that I was fried. I was tired,” Thompson said. “All my shots in that Game 6 were short. They were all on line. They were just short. I don’t know if that’s mental fatigue or physical fatigue. But it happens. Then on top of that, I learned as I get older, I’ll have to rely on my teammates and my smarts to be as efficient scoring the ball as I possibly can be.”
In the playoffs series, Thompson looked good early on, scoring 55 points in the first two games before faltering and scoring just 42 points in the next four games. His struggles reached their apex in Game 6, when he shot a pitiful 3-19 from the field and 2-12 from three-point range, scoring just 8 points and grabbing 5 rebounds.
Klay Thompson Shares a Memorable Gym Experience with late Kobe Bryant
Klay Thompson recently talked about a special recollection he had of meeting Lakers legend, the late great Kobe Bryant in a recent edition of Podcast P with Paul George. Thompson narrated how, in awe, he discovered himself in the same gym as Bryant during the 2013 NBA Global Games. Bryant welcomed him casually before proceeding with his practice.

Thompson’s respect for the “Black Mamba” dates back to his early years in the league, during which he witnessed the incredible events of Bryant’s career, such as his victory in the Slam Dunk Contest and the historic 81-point game. When Thompson talked about his best on-court experience with Bryant, he talked about their first face-off and how strange it was to be guarding a guy he had long idolized.
This experience underscores Thompson’s admiration and strong respect for the legendary Lakers player, as it reveals the enormous influence Bryant had on Thompson’s career. Thompson’s memory bears witness to the lasting influence Bryant had on his colleagues—beyond simple rivalry to become an inspiration and a source of wonder.
