The Golden State Warriors appear to have lost their way this season. Draymond Green is not expected to return anytime soon. Klay Thompson only shows flashes of his past brilliance. Stephen Curry has been consistently left trying to lift the team past the levels fans expect them to play at.
However, the best shooter of all time has had a bit too much to do, thus far. The lack of help and the way the Warriors have lost in recent weeks is bound to have an impact on the players. Klay Thompson in particular, looked shell-shocked after the recent defeat to the Dallas Mavericks.
The 33-year-old forms one half of the Splash Brothers, and has won 4 Championships during his time at the franchise. Following the Warriors’ most recent victory over the Orlando Magic which saw Thompson take up a more limited role, he revealed the impact of a conversation that he recently had with head coach Steve Kerr.
Sometimes I forget just how successful and how lucky I've been. That just helped me change my whole mindset and forget about shooting splits or points per game or All-Star games. Just to enjoy being in this Warriors uniform and appreciate what we’ve built because it’s such a rare opportunity for any professional athlete to be a part of so much success. And to try to pass that torch to the younger guys and keep this thing going.
It seems as if the head coach wants his players to remember the kind of success they have already had in the league. The likes of Curry, Green and Thompson will already go down as the three biggest legends of the franchise.
Having already achieved everything that is possible to in the NBA, Thompson claimed that he wants to switch his mindset and focus more on enjoying his time at the franchise, whatever might be remaining of it. That, will also make passing the torch a much easier job, than how it has seemed for the Dub Nation, thus far.
The Golden State Warriors have a range of issues to solve
There is little doubt that the Warriors need a change in fortune if they are to emerge as title contenders this season. Currently 11th with a 16-17 overall record, the team has struggled due to a range of reasons.
In Green’s absence, Chris Paul has become a permanent starter, with no clarity over the Forward positions. The Warriors have tried out the likes of Jonathan Kuminga and even Brandin Podziemski, but only with limited success.
While there are solutions including the arrival of a couple of pieces, fans will fear that the longstanding legacy of their core has finally come to an end. The Warriors might have another Playoff run in them but look highly unlikely to achieve anything special this season.
