Klay Thompson has consistently stood as a cornerstone player in the Golden State Warriors‘ soaring success over the past several years. However, his future in Dub Nation has been in the air the entire off-season, with him entering the final year of the $189.9 million deal he signed in 2019. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2023-24 NBA season.
To the delight of the Warriors fans, the team is apparently in contract talks with their human sniper. Nonetheless, the front office appears to be exercising caution and not rushing into a deal, especially in light of Thompson’s inconsistent performance last season. According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, the contract talks will be slow. She also suggested Thompson thinks he can secure a better deal if he performs well in the 2023-24 season.
“My understanding is that they have opened contract extension talks with Klay Thompson. This is a slow process. This idea that he’s been eligible for awhile and they haven’t done anything… no, they’ve started talking. They’ve exchanged proposals. There’s no hurry to these discussions. The optionality goes both ways. Not necessarily he’s trying to leave, but just the optionality that he didn’t have a great year last year. It behooves him to have a great year this year and he’s becomes more valuable if he does,” Shelburne said on the Lowe Post podcast.
While Thompson has displayed some signs of decline, he remains a formidable threat from beyond the arc when he’s in top form. Thompson became a free agent in 2019 following his recovery from an ACL injury and wasted no time in securing a five-year, $189 million contract.
Warriors owner sheds light on Klay Thompson contract extension situation
Warriors owner Joe Lacob recently confirmed that there have been contract extension talks with Klay Thompson’s agent. However, he emphasized that the process is still in its early stages. He expressed confidence in Thompson, stating that the Dubs are eager to retain him and are looking forward to engaging in substantial discussions regarding a potential new contract.
“I do,” Lacob said when asked if he expects Thompson to re-sign with the Dubs. “Look, we’ve had some very brief discussions at this point with his agent, but they’re very, very early. I think we’re all still adjusting to figuring out what our financial situation is, our cap space situation.”
Following a post-season in which Thompson didn’t meet his usual standards, there were questions about whether the team would retain him. Nonetheless, it appears that the Warriors are demonstrating their loyalty to Thompson and their belief in his ability to continue making significant contributions on the court.
